In this, the final solo album released before Gene Clark's untimely death at age 46, he once again proved his talents as a superior singer and songwriter. In original songs ranging from the haunting "Rain Song" to the cowboy narrative "Rodeo Rider" to the semi-mystical "Blue Raven" Clark demonstrates his range and versatility as a sensitive, soulful songwriter. He also revisits his early career (as co-founder of The Byrds) by providing new versions of two songs from The Byrds first album, "Mr. Tambourine Man," this time in an extended, piano-driven version, and "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," written by Clark and recognized as a classic rock song. Dillard & Clark was a country rock duo which featured ex-Byrds member Gene Clark and bluegrass banjo player Doug Dillard. The group was formed in 1968, shortly after Clark departed The Byrds, and Dillard left The Dillards. They were backed up by, among others, Bernie Leadon, Chris Hillman, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Byron Berline, Michael Clarke, and Laramy Smith.

The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark is a country rock album by Dillard & Clark. The album was recorded in 1968, shortly after Clark departed The Byrds for the second time, and Dillard left The Dillards. The album is hailed by critics and musicians as a masterpiece of the country rock genre.

I've always thought it looks like Gene & Doug are passing a doobie between them.
Something from their next effort...not Gene's favorite. He left after, but some fine tunes remained!

| You know I believe Gene thought of himself more as a solo artist than part of a group but it looked as if he liked to collaborate at times. As the years have passed, I regret that perhaps he didn't get involved with Chris Hillman's Desert Rose Band. In a way I could see why since DRB was in a little different direction that what he'd normally do. But it would have been interesting what kind of songs he could have wrote for them and then they'd play. If only... |

"Fairly" is an understatement! He started as the ONLY writer for the BYRDS and raked in all the royalties...the others did not like that. Gene drove a Porsche while the rest walked-it to buy a taco or two for supper.
He is very prolific! Many MANY unreleased tracks on bootlegs out there!

| You know it's too bad that there apparently isn't anyone who can "organize" all that prolific output. I'd figure perhaps a family member of real close friend could do it, someone with an understanding of him and his work. Of course there are a few of his records out but there are gems as we can hear hiding all over the place. Beats me why this is all happening. |
