| Always an emormously tragic irony here.Homages being paid using the mode of articulation that endeared the subject to us all to begin with.Paul McCartney's "Here Today",his John Lennon tribute from the "Tug of War" album always jerks a tear or two.I also get a chill almost everytime I hear the Commodores' "Night Shift",which acknowledges the gifts of Jackie Wilson and the late great Marvin Gaye.The Righteous Brothers' "Rock and Roll Heaven",however,is a rather banal though well intentioned effort.I'm afraid that at times,tribute tunes and concerts can sometimes slip into boorish sentimentality.The line "the day the music died",a reference to the plane crash that claimed Buddy Holly,Richie Valens,and the Big Bopper from Don MacLean's "American Pie" will always remain a timelessly poignant expression that can be applied to the moments of all the immortal passings. |
