The Wichita Train Whistle Sings was the first solo album by Michael Nesmith and was recorded while he was still a member of the Monkees. It peaked at No. 144 on the Billboard Pop Albums charts.
The album comprises instrumentals performed by a full orchestra. All but one of the songs were recorded by the Monkees (a couple of them weren't released until the Missing Link albums).
The album was made over a two-day session on November 18 and 19 1967 and featured the best musicians in Hollywood, including ten trumpets, ten trombones, ten saxophones, 2 drummers, five percussionists, four pianos, eight basses, seven guitars. As it was the weekend, all musicians were paid double time and the session was catered by Chasens, the finest restaurant in Hollywood. It all cost $50,000. Nesmith explained to Hal Blaine that he was about to pay a similar sum in tax and he would rather spend it on the sessions and write it off than give it to the IRS[1].
When Nesmith released "Wichita Train" on CD, he recorded the album onto digital from a phonograph. As he explained in the liner notes, the album was intended to be played on vinyl, and therefore, attempted to capture the album's true essence.
The album was also remastered and re-released along with Timerider in 2008 on the Edsel label.[2]
1. "Nine Times Blue" 2. "Carlisle Wheeling" 3. "Tapioca Tundra" 4. "Don't Call on Me" 5. "Don't Cry Now" 6. "While I Cried" 7. "Papa Gene's Blues" 8. "You Just May Be the One" 9. "Sweet Young Thing" (Nesmith, Gerry Goffin, Carole King) 10. "You Told Me"
Tapioca Tundra...not the instrumental from the album...but sung by Michael...he still has it!!
I wonder if Morrison had lived ....would he be bald, shaven, & wear a tux at 2010 BMI Music Awards like Michael did ?

Me too, bob! It is a very understated but powerful album jacket cover, but an amazing bit of music within!

isn't it supposed to be a really bad album of instrumental music cut during the Monkees period?
haven't heard much Nes - a Rhino collection (the Old Stuff) and the stuff with the Monkees (including the Missing Links packages) but have yet to hear such works as the Prisoner
Or to read the Prisoner, considering
So much music, so little time
"Some of Shellys Blues" is a definite fave!
(off Monkees Missing Links v 3 AND the Old Stuff!!) |

No=it is good and it has seen it's reissues. A pretty brave effort for a Monkee.

when did it see release? around the same time as the Monkees Present (probably the Monkees worst; at least until the wretched Changes!)
Always hated Tapioca Tundra cos it lifted Gene Clark!

re: recording date...
"it is good and it has seen it's reissues. A pretty brave effort for a Monkee."
It was recorded Nov 18 & 19, 1967 so it was released in 1968 sometime. It peaked at #144...does that beat Forever Changes...how ironic..... a tax write-off outsells the greatest album of all time?!
Not to lessen Nez's effort ...it was quite an undertaking...with benefits! And fine catering!!

which album was the one that Michael Nesmith (aka Michael Blessing) financed when he was in the Monkees?
I wish I heard more by Mike - Monkee wise, I like Mickys recent solo album (Carole King tribute) more than his kiddies album (!) along with Petes side group (Shoe Suede Blues)
haven't heard any of Davys solo stuff (Justme seems to be hard to find - I read of it years ago in Goldmine but can't find it)
but Mikes stuff I am intrigued by, just from the Older Stuff album (Rhino) I have. Really good songs. I think "St Matthew" is on that, fine Dylan influenced track
My library has Infinite Rider - is that good?
He also seems to have recorded a track for Kid Rhino (as did Micky - Micky Dolenz puts you to sleep) - Prairie Lullabye on the Cowboy Album
Last I heard of Mike he had written a book (The long, sandy hair of Neftoon Zamora) (this is after the Prisoner, which seems to have been a 70s book/cd release - panned in Mojo magazine incidentally!)
Is Tropical Campfires any good?
So much music so little time - when I look online it certainly seems there are a lotta live Mike albums; one assumes he still plays out
Thankfully Rhino have done justice to his former bands legacy, with copious liner notes for such releases as Music Box, Listen to the Band (hey!) Headquarters Sessions (where Mike really came into his own with tracks like "Sunny Girlfriend"
all together now -
"She owns and operates her own sunshine factory!" |

Tropical Campfires.....
Tropical Campfires is an album by Michael Nesmith, released in 1992. Tropical Campfires is the 9th and final time Red Rhodes would be play on a Michael Nesmith studio album (Rhodes died in 2005).
Allmusic writes "Along with Lindsey Buckingham's Out of the Cradle, this album may be one of the finest and most underrated albums of the 1990s."
All versions of this album were released encoded in the Dolby Digital Pro-Logic surround sound format. It can be decoded into surround sound using any Pro-Logic multichannel receiver.
