Recently I was on line with George Bunnell of the Strawberry Alarm Clock.I asked him to regail me about the various hangouts along the strip back in the day of the lovely stills you've provided here.I asked if he hung out at a place called Ben Frank's,an all night diner I had heard Davy Jones mention in a Monkees' documentary I once saw.He said sure and also named some clubs he and the band frequented. The Strawberries, along with Love and Byrds and Doors, played many sets at Whisky a Go Go,Ashwood,Cyro's and some place called the Starwood,or something sounding like that. One key question I had in store was wether Jim Morrison was really like in the Oliver Stone film.As expected, his answer was yes Morrison was difficult to communicate with as he was always in some sort of otherworldy state, wether from drugs or it was sometimes just his natural frame of mind.George Bunnell also told me he still has contact with Robby Krieger today. So as we take a gander at the photos presented here,we can only gaze in awe at the old stomping grounds of what was once a varitable wonderland of classic pop comraderie. This is where the Turtles hung with the Association. The crossroads between the Association,Mamas and Papas, and Lovin' Spoonful.I'm sure a splendid time was guarenteed for all!

Right....that's where Bryan met Arthur....LoVE held court (after hours) there-- when they WERE the TOP band in LA.

Don't you have LOVE STORY, capt'?!!

BTW....those aren't stills of the Strip! CLICK on them and they play short videos filmed back in the day!

I got a gas out of more than a couple things in Michael Stuart's book, but two come to mind immediately. There was the time Lee phoned in a bomb threat to a club just so Love could have the night off.By the way, also on the bill that night-A 22 year old Linda Rondstadt with her Stone Poneys!I also was amused by the story behind the back cover photo shoot for "Changes".I always thought Arthur was deliberately making a planned statement by exhibiting a broken vase with flowers included as he gave a mysterious glare into the camera.Turns out, either he or an animal had accidentally knocked it over at the last minute before the camera clicked.I kinda believe in a small amount of fate here,as many of Lee's lyrics do indicate a mild fascination with the fact that no matter how much beauty there ever is in the world, and there's always lots, there's always something around that creates a hinderance.I just always figured it was some sort of surreal intellectual ploy.Just goes to show you sometimes we can read a little too much into those whose expressions we place high value on.Same thing happened to John Lennon in '67.Sick and tired of hearing brash over analysis of the Beatles "Sgt. Pepper" lyrics,he penned the non-sensical "I Am The Walrus" in a deliberately lyrically menacing way. After the writing,Lennon remarked to a friend something about "giving those '****ers' something to think about".Subsequently, the stanzas became extensive "Paul is Dead" fodder two years later.

I have fond memories of hanging out on the Strip in 1966-68 , and the energy. I was fortunate to see LOVE at the Whiskey in 69-70. Then, there was "Hair", at the Aquarious Theater I saw, and before that, in 1966, I saw LOVE at the Hullubaloo. I somehow avoided the riots on the Sunset Strip! it was a wild and freaky era, indeed.....

...what the world needs now...

You know I never went there but it's sort of how I envisioned it. Nice "colorful" strip man.....

In the minds of many, the hipster scene is tragically attached with stigma that they were all just a horde of stoned out runaway neer do wells. While the antiestablishment movemnet of the times did produce more than a few who got too high and went too far just to spit in their parents' faces, further study would reveal alot of beautiful art and insight eminated from the period's chemically liberated psyches. The use of psychomimetic drugs is always controversial, but of course,in order to have controversey, there must be strong and clear argument for EITHER side. There go the conservs again. If there's any kind of argument resulting instalemate, their opinion is the tiebreaker. It's evident at least to this individual, many enojoyed the experience of altered states of conciousness without becoming malodorous obnoxious transients.
