and continues in 2011....in Hollywood.
Film of Beatles' first U.S. concert to screen Feb. 11 in Hollywood for first time in 47 years
This week is the 47th anniversary of the Beatles’ first U.S. visit and their initial appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” that plunged the country into the deep end of Beatlemania.
Two days after that seismic telecast, the Fab Four played their first bona fide concert on U.S. soil at the Coliseum in Washington D.C., an event that was shown in movie theaters around the country in a closed-circuit telecast that has never been widely broadcast since.
But on Friday, the American Cinematheque will show the film of the entire concert for the first time since it was seen back in 1964, a film that also included pre-taped live performances by the Beach Boys and Lesley Gore.
Historian and Beatles enthusiast Domenic Priore (author of “Riot on the Sunset Strip: Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Last Stand in Hollywood”) will host the screening and will be joined by Beach Boys documentary director Alan Boyd and rock-and-roll visual archivist Ron Furmanek and other guests in presenting the film. Kinescope copies showed up in the 1970s on the midnight movie circuit, but the original videotapes that are the source of Friday’s screenings at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood have not been shown in public in 47 years.

Thanks for this LK....it looks great. I can remember really well back in 1963, She Loves You had been Number 1 for ages. And then seemingly from nowhere, I Want To Hold Your Hand jumped in right behind it at Number 2....that was I think, the first time anything like that had happened in the UK charts. After that, every Beatles single went in at Number 1 until Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane. In 1963-64, there was a fixed price for singles here: 6 shillings and 8 pence....this was more than most kids of my age got for their weekly pocket money. But an older friend gave me a spare copy of She Loves You/I'll Get You several months later.......I was ever so proud of it! It used to get taken everywhere!
And I always loved Lesley Gore....rather like Cilla Black, she helped to define the early 60s. It's Judy's Turn To Cry, Cry Me A River.....bring back the 60s! |

You know when I look back at that time it makes me feel good. Even walking home home from school in a driving rain and hearing I Should've Known Better" couldn't dampen the feeling I got when I heard the song playing..stays with me today...heh heh everybody should play that Beatles US dvd once a month.......
And when I saw the Super Bowl half time show I saw just how far we've come from those Beatle days to the Black Eye Peas when it comes to "playing" in front of an audience! The Ed Sullivan Show now looks so quaint! |

john9--Cilla was a great talent but never made it over here....she was a huge star in the UK as i remember.
rocker--I'll take quaint....not a fan of Black Eyed Peas AT ALL, so after getting half-time with Tom Petty, McCartney, the last couple years this was HUGE let down and low point for me.
Beatles '62. '63, '64 was the zenith of musical ecstasy for me...

I've played their vinyl till the grooves wore out, listened to CDs endlessly, know what song is next on almost all albums. But i've seen so little live performances. That little peek of this showing reminded me of what I had forgotten. The boys were fantastic performers, showmen and entertainers. And they were loving it all. |
