By the way, the second free play in this interview is a very nice acoustic Stills, alone, doing Suite: Judy Blue Eyes _____________________________________________ Letting your freak flag fly is a state of mind, not a fashion statement. -lk |

Last Thing On My Mind

Review..this instead... https://recordcollectormag.com/reviews/album/paradise
With the BBC punishing its licence payers by beaming a parade of weepy stage school neurotics into homes every Saturday night, it’s an overwhelming joy to hear an assured and confident voice giving Over The Rainbow the reserve and respect it merits. Collins’ take on the pivotal song from The Wizard Of Oz is superb, exhibiting the same clarity and control she brought to Stephen Sondheim’s Send In The Clowns.
It’s one of several familiar tunes on her first album for five years, another unassuming collection from one of the all time great interpretative voices. Tim Buckley’s soldier lament Once I Was continues her commitment to social and political activism, as does Amy Speace’s more recent and painfully evocative Weight Of The World.
Stephen Stills steps up for a beautiful harmony on Tom Paxton’s Last Thing On My Mind, while Joan Baez lends a hand on her own Diamonds & Rust. It’s Collins flying solo, however, on the traditional Ozarks ballad Dewy Dens Of Yarrow that will have the hairs standing upright on necks, the strength and the passion of the vocal astonishing for a singer just turned 70.
