As Andrew Sandoval and Brian Hogg relate in their respective (and excellent) essays for Four Sail and Out There, Drachen Theaker briefly became a member of Love following a falling out between Arthur Lee and George Suranovich. And of course, the ex Crazy World of Arthur Brown man was in the band long enough to provide the drumming on I'm With You, Your Friend and Mine, Good times and Signed DC. I hadn't realised until today that in addition to working with groups as diverse as Hawkwind and Fairport Convention, Drachen (a mancunian himself) had previously been a member of Manchester band, The Measles...whom I saw live on stage at a BBC recording in 1965. Here's a 2009 summary of his career (including his time with Love) from a local Manchester newspaper.

I was saddened to read that Drachen had died from a brain tumour back in 1992. And so belatedly, sleep well mate......and thanks for the part you played in Love's legacy. |

Thanks for this. For some reason I never realised before I must have seen DT as part of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown gig I went to circa 1968. I've met Arthur Brown a couple of times in recent years at his gigs and now annoyed ay myself for not asking about DT
We can spend all day arguing that Love’s Forever Changes is the greatest album of all time. But let’s not argue, it is. |

Yes Stewart - and as such he stands as the only member of Love ever to have appeared on Top of the Pops. The story goes that once Arthur heard that he had been the drummer on Fire, Drachen was hired without audition. I'm not certain whether he featured in that Measles' lineup, I saw in '65. The only thing I can remember about that show was their cover of The Price of Love....which was then the Everly Brothers' current single.
Further - since we are never likely to see any footage of Drachen in Love, here he is on the said Top of the Pops in 1968:
