I just watched a (newly acquired) DVD of Magical Mystery Tour with many little art film with a lot extras. Most interesting was a segment of interviews with each Beatle about the making of the film and reaction to it then and now.
I like it a lot, because I don't see it as a theatrical release like HELP! or Hard Days Night. It is, as Paul says, a nice bit if great music in a nice little art film.
Hard to beat it with tracks like "I am a Walrus".
It was up against the hardest of walls when released in the UK on Boxing Day and in BLACK AND WHITE! The psychedelic colors were lost totally to the viewer and the movie was justly panned by the British press....bad audio too. Theuy wouldn't wait for the completed color version. No chance for even a showing in the US after such bad press.
But the color version shows, to me, just how mich fun it was and is and how it has become a nice slice of 60's history and music on film.
If you ge a chance, get a copy from someone who has it..not been released in DVD format as yet....and enjoy what Spielberg said was a "must view" art film back in film school.
Anyone else enjoy this little art film with some of the best music videos ever? And seeing the fabs is always fun in this informal little film.

No...i got it (DVD-R) in trade...It has the TV film...IN COLOR. ANd a bunch of bonus features (did it come that way on VHS?)
It is the best version I've seen. Still, with the occasional lines and dust spots popping in and out.
I don't know if Paul will ever let this out (or Let It Be) but in the bonus interview, he and Ringo and George are quite positive about it, must be twenty years down the road and they all have good memories of it all. Paul talks of Spielberg and the art film aspect and I agree. It is inusual and cutting edge....the kind of thing film students use still many years later...you know the all too common shaky camera effect of today & off-the-cuff feel to it all.
Contents-

I love the MMT music. Lennon is obviously blazed out in the film! especially in the spaghetti scene with Fat Lady! In the Wizard scene, "sugar-cubes" is mentioned. "Flying" is cool!

George (in the extras)told of how the spaghetti scene was his favorite and that John had had that dream the night before..told the guys and they said we gotta do it. Ya I love Flying. Can you imagine how silly it must have been in B&W..in the Bonus section, it is shown in B&W the way the BBC showed it and it was ...just a scene over Iceland...the psychedelics were totally lost for the viewer.
The whole film's effect were the colors!
