Alexandra "Sandy" Elene McClean Denny (1947-1978)
I have lovely Sandy's 1972 ST solo LP on now. So good.
What a wonderful track list!

I was listening to her vinyl just now and thought "The Music Weaver" was so perfect a way to describe her....guess I'm not alone as I just saw the double CD at amazon by the same title.

Right on LK - it's like listening to the singing of the angels. She has been revered by so many...including Kate Bush on her affecting and complex 1980 composition Blow Away (For Bill). In it she glimpses a beautiful afterlife.... and meets some of her deceased musical heroes...except they are no longer deceased. The last line reads:
"Bolan and Moony are heading the show tonight"  |

| I don't know..maybe the greatest singer of her generation?? She's a little like Nick Drake now I think. People are really coming into her music after all these years. Yeah, who knows here the time goes, eh? And note she's on Zep's "Battle of Evermore"... |

Remarkably, "Evermore" is included along with her many great works, solo and with all the bands, on "THe Music Weaver" double CD.

Also check out Sandy's early work with the The Strawbs....one of Britain's very first folk rock bands. Later on (in 1972 or 73 I think), they had a big hit over here with Lay Down....something about that one just seemed to match the mood of the moment. An extended version of Sandy's album with them from 1967 is about to be released:

I have nothing by the Strawbs....do they sound much like Fairport? Or more traditional?

| Strawbs...what an interesting band too..there's no end to all that good English trad/folk stuff in the vaults...and speaking of are there any contemporary bands worth mentioning in that genre that you guys know about???..I'm all ears..... |

Because the Strawbs' album wasn't released until "72 (?) I always assumed they were a 70's band, not a pre-Fairport 1967 band!

Fairport still tours, though I've YET to hear Liege and Lief (!)

Sandy Denny was a wonderful singer, agreed - 'The Boxful of Treasures' collection comes highly recommended from this corner. Have been getting back into her stuff again recently as the new singer in the band is a big fan too. Great news about an expanded version of 'All Our Own Work' too.
As for the Strawbs, shame on anyone for not knowing them - easily the best folk-rock band after Fairport, though for a while they did branch out a little more towards prog in the mid-70s. Still making excellent music today, they are well worth seeing live - it's currently basically the line-up which produced 1974's Hero & 'Heroine', but with Oliver Wakeman on keys.

Oh...to thank Sandy for her vocal work on Zep IV, Sandy was given the

The Music Weaver.....' is the fantastic and first ever definitive cross-label anthology celebrating the work of Sandy Denny as well as containing the cream of Sandy's sol o work. Track list really contains wonderful songs. I love to hear them.
