Just finished reading a piece on the Dead and I was just wonderng if any relationship existed between them. Did the West Coast bands know each other well?

Haven't heard anything like that. Each band having been an icon of their respective towns....did they mingle? That would be interesting...too bad we've lost the leaders of both! I know Janis, Grace, and others knew Love thru various gigs, the Castle etc....

The Dead are a band that is either loved or hated it seems....but American Beauty is an undeniable favorite of mine...and Live/Dead.

Both LA and SF were "Hippy"/music centers, but LA was first and the biggest, although SF gets the press due to the Dead & Airplane and Haight, etc. LA got the bad rap maybe because of the riots!

I enjoyed AB too... The article was about trying to find out which was the greatest live gig they did. As usual one comes up the most but people have their favs you know.

Oh thank God. I thought this was an album and feared an album as bad as Dylan and the Dead!

Love and the Dead did play a number of gigs together so they probably knew each other through gigging but probably not othside of that especially with Arthur not leaving LA much.

When I made it to San Francisco in 2003.....one of my best trips ever....people there spoke of Los Angeles as though it was another world entirely. I must admit if I had to choose between going back to 'Frisco and visiting LA, I would probably opt for the former. It is such a relaxed friendly place ...and I especially remember that huge record store in Haight/Asbury......Amoeba? You could really lose yourself in there. And there was an elderly Paul Kantner lookalike sat on a wall and gently strumming an acoustic. Next time I go, I hope to have tea with Grace!

I'm in the middle of reading Tim Buckley's biography by his guitarist, Lee Underwood.
The name of it is "Blue Melody", and there's no mention of AL or Love, even though they played Bido Lido's around the same time Love probably played there.
It would be nice to know what they thought of each other, too.
Anyone know?

Glad to see another Buckley fan...we have a few!! Love his work, especially HappySad & Blue Afternoon. A lot of Bido Lido connections. I'll ask Michael Stuart if he remembers Tim.

KD: Make it 3 at least ! I love and have most of Tim's whole
catalog - Love "Hallucinations" from the Live in the UK 1968
double album. Don't see what all the fuss was really about with
Tim's son Jeff. Though he was very talented he didn't hold a candle
to Tim - a true original.

Free the Buckleys !

Maybe it was just that he had talent and could stand on his own (if there are no comparisons). I remember Jeff saying he never knew his father .....any similarities I guess were purely genetic!!

Tim was a talent like no other....in my head a lot, along with Nick Drake.

Have to admit that it took a few listens, and I had to overcome some
initial hesitation due to my decades-long massive appreciation of the
amazing work of Tim Buckley, but I did reach a point some time ago
wherein I came to greatly appreciate Jeff, as well. My suggestion as
a starting point still has to be Jeff's version of Leonard Cohen's
"Hallelujah," covered by about a gazillion artists, not to mention
L.C.'s own stunning rendition, but Jeff Buckley never fails to bring
chills. Give that one another listen, Keith, and see if you don't
hear at least a little of the genetic blessing that Jeff received
courtesy of his bloodline. Something very special was definitely
in the genes. Tim fans need to be aware that there is a pretty
remarkable Tim Buckley show, live at the Santa Monica Civic,
available on my favorite music sharing site, www.dimeadozen.org.
Grab it while it's still up and available, you'll be very glad that you did.

Thanks, Rick. I'm guessing you had a chance to at least meet Tim...an interview would have been nice!!! (Package will soon be on it's way! Cheers)

KD: Hey RW - thanks I'll give it a listen. Don't get me wrong
here folks - I know Jeff's a stunning talent and well deserving
of any and all accolades - I just like his old man better and
have been listening to him on and off for over 30 years. "Greetings
From LA" smokes !

Hey RW - I just tried to sign up at dimeadozen.org and it
rejected my attempt to sign in because my "email address
does not appear to be valid". And of course I used the same
email address I use here and everywhere else I go - please advise
if you have any suggestion.

KD & Rick......I love MOST of Tim's work but have never been able to get into his extreme/experimental phase...Lorca, etc. Do you listen to that period?...I have the ultimate respect for what he was doing then...should I give it another shot? Convince me.
