I've just been introduced to Krautrock. Awsome experimental stuff from the late 60's and 70's in Germany. The big bands were Can, NEU!, Tangerine Dream, Faust, GuruGuru,Amon Duul, Harmonia.

Most of the guys were classical and jazz musicians who were trained by the likes of Stockhausen and were dismissive of pop music until they heard psychedelia and thought they'd give it a go. Alot of its got a strong fusion jazz vibe especially the rythmn sections but then there's a big classical influence and they basically pioneered electronic music.

Some of its pretty unlistenablly experimental (if you don't like avant gaurd) and some of the electronic stuff just sounds dated, but some of the high points are incredible.

here's some links

Halleluhwah by Can

any stone roses fans will notice where they stole one melody!

Phaedra by Tangerine Dream

basically acid house 20 years before

Archangel Thunderbird by Amon Duul II

Fuzzed up guitars and a cool beat. The vocal style sounds just like a PIL era Johnny Rotten

Halogalo by NEU!

Hey thanks for the links!

big fan of 'Faust' which i beleive is German for fist.

Have a few LP's by Tangerine Dream 2.

a favorite band of mine & influenced by Krautrock is the English/French groop Stereolab, they are prolific, i've been collecting them since 1990,up to about 60 CD's & vinyl now & i don't think i've even touched the surface with them

go check them out

kindest wishes Jim.
