a great one lk....I have the dvd package where there is an additonal dvd called "A Conversation with Gregory Peck". Very good for Peck fans. Atticus was the character he most enjoyed playing in his career. |

Recently finished reading "Oil" by Upton Sinclair. Great read and would be a good introduction to socialism for some. Not at all like the film "There Will Be Blood" which is "very" loosely based on the book. About to start reading "A Most Wanted Man" by John Le Carre. |

old man...You've got a pretty good espionage writer there. I have to admit I've only read Le Carre's earlier spy novels (Tinker Tailor, Small Town in Germany, etc and not his later ones. How has he stood up? |

Yes, I read that the book was really only a starting point for the film (which I didn't think that much of as, I guess, I was expecting a lot more after all the hype) so maybe I would enjoy the novel a lot more. |

The Wasteland can be heavy going. But to me it is like one of those paintings that you keep returning to always to find something new. I first came across the poem in the mid 80s when Channel Four broadcast a wonderful series entitled Six Centuries of Verse...I've still got the accompanying book. They had one part of the poem - 'A Game of Chess' acted out and it has stayed with me almost like no other poetry. Sometime in the mid 90s, Irish thespian Fiona Shaw performed the whole thing on TV as a mesmerising monologue.
"HURRY UP PLEASE ITS TIME"
Amazing - Although Fiona Shaw's acclaimed TV performance was from more than 15 years ago, I have just discovered that she is reprising it on the London stage this very weekend. It does however, appear to have sold out...even the additional permance arranged for Sunday evening. It's a pity - we could all have gone as a group!

Ms shaw has also recently taken it to New York...and here's a review in the NYT:

Yes, there was a 4 star review of it the other day in The Guardian. She was performing it at Wilton's, which is a wonderful old music hall place in the East End. If ever you get a chance to go to Wilton's then do so, it is quite magical.

When I had the money I became a 'friend' of the place as I loved to support it, sadly I cannot afford it now but I really hope it does get saved. |

Yes I saw Mountains of the Moon upon its release....yet another fine movie from Bob Rafelson...and perhaps one of the few of his that did not star Jack Nicholson. Much of it was made in and around Birkenhead.......across the Mersey from Liverpool. Apparently, Mr Rafelson took up residency there for several months.
And Robespierre, Rocker....I think he was admirable in his sincerity......but his ideas became an obsession...and that made him monstrous...and in turn I suppose that makes him fascinating to us. A former student of mine recently gave me a book about him entitled Fatal Purity(by Ruth Scurr). |
