I'm sure most of us can agree that Bryan appeared "bloated, reduced, and unsettling" as Mojo described his appearance and behavior in Love Story. Does anybody know if he was a diagnosed schizophrenic or had another form of mental illness? I know he was a janitor for a time in the years after Love, and that he had an epiphany in a bar when his drink turned to sand and he turned to god afterwards. He later opened a Christian nightclub in Beverly Hills called The Daisy. Almost stranger than fiction. Between Arthur and Bryan, there are so many baffling and enigmatic lost years that are difficult to piece together....

You know from what I've read about him Bryan appeared to me as a musically gifted individual. I'd think that probably gave him the greatest lift in living life. I'm sure the years with Arthur and the band were probably some of his best but on the other hand could've laid him low a bit beacause of various tensions. It would've been interesting to see him link up with another band or be more active in promoting himself on the rock scene like other artists. But to my mind that didn't occur. I don't know why. |

I believe Castle 13 had a long interview with him
There was a 50 page interview with him in Psychedelic Psounds - I think David later reprinted in a later Castle (when it was down to 50 pages from 100 - therefore from issue 14 onward)
(Curiously, the PS interview has Bryan asserting that Neil Young produced on the groups worst track Revelation; according to the book Shakey however, this does not seem to be the case!)
The books for Candys Waltz and if you believe in have info on the young man. I think issue 7 of the Castle focused on the mans band (the Bryan Maclean Band). I forget if his half sister Maria McKee played with him when he did that project (late 70s? 80s?)
I forget when he did that successfull Christian nightclub you mention - I think there was a newspaper article on the place that David reprinted in a later Castle
Castle 14 focuses on Bryan (has a nice picture of Bryan on the cover) with info on the BBC show Bryan appeared on - tho 14 was down to 50 pages (the first 13 are 100 pages)
Also, I think 14 is now only available as a reprint if you buy it from David. Dunno
Hope all of this is of some help. PSounds was published by Broderbound (sp?) and I assume it is out of print |

In regards to Bryan having to work as a janitor and at Pep Boys, I thought he grew up in Beverly Hills and his family knew a lot of celebrities? I always thought that the reason he didn't record for years was that he and his family must have had enough money so he didn't have to work a job. If he did then how did he and they get so broke that he'd be a janitor? Just wondering... |

I think the reason Bryan was working as a janitor was cos he got ripped off on his royalties for his songs on the first couple albums, thanks to Arthur
Its an absolute tragedy he passed before reaching a level of success. Ifyoubelievein is a terrific album
Candy's Waltz, unfortunately, a lesser album, tho the interview with Bryan on that is interesting (theres a transcription of it somewhere on the web I bet!) |

I met him backstage at the long-gone Old Waldorf nightclub in San Francisco in the 70's. It was a Love "Reunion" show with Arthur and 2 other guys. Also standing by me was a quiet Tom Petty who was there to hang with his pal Dwight Twilley who was the opener. Bryan was pretty big with long hair and a full beard. I asked him a few star-struck lame questions and he politely tried to answer but I could tell he wasn't quite all there. Arthur was freakin' out about something and Bryan seemed to wish he was anyplace someplace else. He was kind of spooky but gentle nevertheless. The show itself was a disaster. |

KD: Yep - there are soundboard boots of these Old Waldorf shows floating around - If I'm not mistaken, Bryan only sings on a couple of born again Christian songs in the set - Friends of mine who recall going also told me that Arthur Lee "looked and seemed to act like a hard drugs dealer".

I was wondering....on the inside cover of andifyoubelievein, a bearded Bryan looks pretty good & fit---is that pic years before Love Story interviews, or at the end of his life? ....because he looks pretty good...did he get it together at the end of his life?

I remember reading in the Castle that when Bryan's band opened for Arthur once that Arthur threw a hot cup of coffee at him while he was playing (!)
My favorite Arthur story is him leaving the stage while his backing band was playing "One" (off Arthur Lee) and going to get some buttermilk across the way
WTF? you know? |

I just heard that interview for the first time today... I loved it! The album, though some may consider it lesser than Ifyoubelievein, is really good. Maybe I'm just excited to hear "new" material, but I rather enjoyed it.
