I've just found out about this singer/songwriter from California who was active a little bit after AL (she was around CA. in the 60s, but released her two LPs in 1970 and 1971).
Like AL, she was the first artist to be signed by a label (David Geffin's Asylum Records) and was eclipsed by subsequent artists signed to that label (like the Doors did to Love), and as a result faded away into obscurity.
Also like AL, she spent time in jail for various criminal offenses, and wrote songs that seemed to have a meaning of their own, not suited to commercial trends.
Like AL, she seemed to be her own worst enemy, screwing up her life with drugs and (unlike AL) ultimately ODing at the age of 35 in absolute obscurity.
Her music didn't sound the same as AL's, but it was folk-rock, with some country, jazz and gospel (she was the church organist in the reform school she was sent to).
She reportedly was a prostitute, a junkie, a criminal, and bi-sexual.
Anyone familiar with her music or life? |

Yeah, the similarities abound- Both tripped their mind out on LSD (which she called the "White Peace"- she called heroin the "Black Peace"), Both could be poster child for Borderline Personality Disorder, if not Bi-polar Disorder. Both wrote songs with strange structures, coded lyrics, unusual harmonies, but AL was more rock-oriented.
I don't think we should be too harsh in our judgment of Judy Sills.
She did kick heroin cold turkey in jail, and only went back on it because doctors wouldn't prescribe pain medication for her severe injuries in car crashes because of her convictions on narcotics possession.
I think I definitely could have helped both of them, if they hadn't fired me as their shrink because of my "unorthodox therapies". Look at how much I helped Syd Barrett! Yours, Dr. Warren Kruger- Rock and/or Roll Psychiatrist |

Judee Sill is one of the best singer-songwriters you never heard. I highly recommend the "Abracadabra - Asylum Years" compilation - both her albums with lots of alternative and live takes. Far too many achingly gorgeous tunes to single out any tasters - just get the albums!! |
