Hello everyone... new member here and this is my first post. I wanted to throw up a post introducing myself, but I also have a question that I'm sure you guys could help me out with.
I discovered Love like so many others, by listening to Forever Changes. But, being in my 20s, this didn't happen for me until about two years ago. The album was absolutely mesmerizing to me from the first listen and I've been hooked ever since. Since that point, I've picked up a few other Love albums, so now I have everything from the debut through Four Sails. I like all of them, but I see very little about any albums from Love or Arthur after Four Sails. What would you guys recommend I look for as a next purchase? Are any of the post-Four Sails albums essentials in your book? I'd love to hear everybody's thoughts.
Thanks... I'm very happy that I found this site, as connecting with other Love fans my age and in my area is not an easy thing! |

KD: Hey Goodfella !
Try these on for size:
All of them !
Na, just kidding:
Out Here / Out There Arthur's solo album Vindicator (just re-released) False Start The New Rose Album Electrically Speaking / Back on the Scene (I'm biased !) The Forever Changes Concerts
avoid: Arthur's solo album from the early 1980's on Rhino. and the box set Love Story as it appears you have all that already.
Free the albums !

Greetings, Good...
Keith mentioned Out Here / Out There, and False Start. All of these tracks, plus a never-before-available disc of live material from 1970, were just released as 'The Blue Thumb Recordings'. Unfortunately it seems to be tough to get at this point - it was a limited-issue release - but if you can find it that's the way to go for those albums.
If you haven't heard The Forever Changes Concerts yet....or seen the DVD....you need to! I'm sorry that you missed the chance to see those shows - they were truly legendary. |

The first song to really hook me was A House Is Not a Motel, and this is probably still my favorite Love song. The lyrics seemed very cryptic to me for some reason, and then the guitar duel at the end of the song was great.
The main thing that impressed me was the feeling I had after listening to the entire album... it's kind of hard to describe, but hopefully you'll get what I'm saying, but the entire album had an amazing feel or atmosphere to it. Plus, just the amazing songwriting. I found unbelievable that a songwriter as talented as Arthur would end up being virtually unknown to the public at large, so it felt like I had "discovered" something nobody else knew about -- and while that's obviously not the case, with nobody I knew knowing the least about Love, that's how it felt. |

Hey Goodfella welcome to the board. I'm a bit like you really. Listened to Forever Changes fairly randomly 3-4 years back after seeing the interesting cover in a music shop. And like you, being in my 20s i've found that you don't often meet many other love fans. So this site is great! I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you've 'discovered' Love in some way as well.
Like you after hearing FC i went out and got 'Love' and Da Capo. Then Four Sail and I've gone on to get all the studio albums. I'd recommend the Blue Thumb Recordings. I'd also recommend picking up Bryan Maclean's solo stuff too.
This is the time and this is the time and it is time, time, time, time, time, time, time.....

Hey Goodfella, judging from your description I think you got it. Even more amazing, that feeling does not go away, even after 40 years of listening to FC. |

I got The Blue Thumb Recordings today! They have it on iTunes, so rather than bother trying to track down a copy I just went ahead and bought it there for $15. I'm looking forward to listening to them today and tomorrow.
Also, I only recently got Four Sail (sorry for the misspelling in the topic title) but I can't believe how much I like the album. It's very different from FC, but the songwriting is still excellent and it's nice to see the hard-rocking side of Arthur. Some of the songs on here are as good as anything else I've heard from the band: Good Times, Singing Cowboy, and particularly Always See Your Face. Always See Your Face is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs. |

Four Sail is more than just a solid album. Its actually quite brilliant. The only issue seems to be that the original Love were not a part of it, which for many leaves a sour taste in the pallet. The album's opener "August" is one of the most brilliant and complex songs Arthur has ever written, and stacks up against any jazz rock or prog song of 1969.
There is a very cool selection of tracks on the record, and the musicianship is extremely great. The difference between that Love and the old Love I believe lies more in the creative process as Four Sail almost serves as Arthur's first true solo album of sorts. It does lack some of that mysterious psychedelic fun and jangle of the first three records, but its a nice maturation of style. I will however not argue that I would have preferred one more album from Johnny Echols, Bryan MacLean and the the other guys, but oh well.

"one more album...just wondering...is it possible that there are unrecorded songs by Arthur that he would have liked to see the light of day before he died. Maybe he was working some things out besides doing the FC concerts? |

I'll be interested to know how you get on with the Blue Thumb recordings, Goodfella. I have to say that I'm one of these people who don't like any of the post Four Sail recordings - in fact, as Thomas has suggested, I feel that the band Love finished with Four Sail - indeed possibly with FC - and after that Arthur produced a number of what were effectively solo albums in an entirely different vein. I think that Bryan MacLean had an immense influence on the Love sound that I so appreciate and when he left the magic went with him.

For me 'Out Here' is the last one that is truly worthy of Love's name - although as with many double albums, it would probably have made a far better single release. The really good songs on the album are in my book, up there with Arthur's very best. Although I've always had an affection for 'False Start', the objective side of me recognises that its minimalist titles and lyrics put it well behind 'Four Sail' and 'Out Here' in quality. And as for 'Vindicator' - well after 35 years I have now finally given up on trying to like that one. I think that David Angel had it right when he said in 'Love Story' that he believed that certain people were destined to do a particular thing at a particular time - and after that their time has gone. From 1966-69, I believe that Arthur was one of the most creative and formidable talents in popular music. I am just thankful that he got a chance to relive all that so gloriously towards the end of his life. |
