Too tough to choose but i would definitely have 'Stephanie Knows Who' in there somewhere. Also 'Five String Serenade' has suddenly become so powerful and important to me.
This is the time and this is the time and it is time, time, time, time, time, time, time.....

Strangely enough, Stephanie Knows Who was the song which switched me on to Love, but it was in fact a cover version. I had bought a 2LP best of by the Move and their cover of SKW was on it. I loved the song so much, I did some digging and got talking to a friend who was going to tape me Alive She Cried by the doors, which had just come out (Wow, that was nearly a quarter of a century ago!). He said he was sure his older brother had something by Love. That something turned out to be Da Capo; I killed that tape pretty soon, endlessly rewinding it to listen to the Love, rather than doors album. I think if I had to pick a Love Top Ten, I would start with the whole of Side One of DC - anything else would just be a bonus!! |

Agreed, Shaun Arnold! Maybe the People Would Be the Times has always been in my ever-revolving top three....those slightly surreal and melancholy mariachi horns gets me every time. Such a wise and woozy and enigmatic song.

Agreed, LeeRob. Well done, Michael, I reckon you've nailed it as far as I'm concerned. I will treasure my memory of seeing AL and BL playing Robert Montgomery perfectly. My favourite..well, today anyway! |

I think of FC and side one of Da Capo as a single work, but that would be cheating, right? 1. Listen to my song - heartbreaking, operatic 2. Always see your face - love the guitar solo (reminds me of George Harrison), are those trombones or french horns? 3. My little red book - the chords sound good to me, Burt Bacharach! 4. I still wonder - a little CSNY influence? 5. Doggone - love the lyrics and melody - the drum solo has some chops! 6. August - coincidence? 7. Your mind and we belong together - that's a pocket symphony, Brian Wilson! 8. My flash on you - killer fretless(?) bass line 9. Signed d.c. - the electric version is awesome as well 10. Emotions - surfin' in VA (or anywhere) |

Oh yeah no.1 is Arthur's testament!.... I've always liked "I'm With You" on the Four Sail album...nice pop-ish rock tune! And anyway what's with the knight motif on that album and that guy off on the left side. Does anybody know who he is?

I've been listening to Love since first hearing them at college (about 20 yrs. ago). My top 10 keeps changing but "Five String Serenade" is always in there somewhere. |

10 - "Colored Balls Falling" -- a 2-minute jewel distilling all that's best on the first album 9 - "The Castle" -- a song that starts out in one place, and ends in another. (But then he did that a lot.) 8 - "Que Vida" -- what's with the champagne cork popping? Always makes me laugh. 7 - "Gazing" -- Arthur calls out "Johnny's Turn Now" and we get a brief visit to heaven 6 - "She Comes in Colors" 5 - "Andmoreagain" -- just because 4 - "Good Times" -- Others have their favorites from Four Sail, but this is my list! "No more bad times" indeed. 3 - "Maybe the People Should Be the Times" -- Arthur doesn't want us weeping for him. 2 - "Live And Let Live" -- served his time VERY well. 1 - "You Set the Scene" -- an epitaph anyone would be proud of.
(Not weeping, exactly, but the tears have caked on my shirt.)
Thanks again, Arthur. |

can't believe I left out "A House is Not a Motel" and "Daily Planet." If I really had to limit myself to 10 songs I'd have to take my pistol. |
