KD: Well not sure if anyone here remembers Experience Hendrix's
(The Company owned by Jimi's Family who runs his estate)"Jimi Hendrix
Magazine", which ran for the first couple of years since they took over his estate. In one of the first dozen or so issues, there was an interview with a photographer who had shot Jimi in concert several times, as well as some of the accompaning pictures. In the interview the photographer mentioned that as he was from LA he had also shot the original LOVE line up on a number of occassions. Guess what folks ? I've never seen any of these photos printed.

The name of the guy escapes me now, but I've still got the issue at home, so I'll dig it out shortly. The guy now lives in the Northern VA area, and at the time I actually did a "people search" to try and find him to check out the pics. At the time I was employed by Arthur's legal team to dig such things out - photos, bootlegs and the like. This was also during the time of the production and release of "Electrically Speaking".

KD: Arthur's book was / is being ghost written by his literary friend
Marvin White. I'll get with him shortly to see how it's coming along.

Free the books !

Earlier I’d written on an interview I’d seen in the Experience Hendrix Magazine with an LA based photographer who’d managed to shoot not only Jimi Hendrix on many occasions, but also the original line up of LOVE on several occasions too.

Well I hunted through the closet full of magazines, and I managed to find the edition from December, 2000. At the time I tried in vain to hunt down the photographer, because my original plan was to include several of these never before seen prints in the upcoming release “Electrically Speaking” which I produced for Arthur in March of 2001, but it wasn’t to be. I couldn’t track him down.

The photographer’s name is Tom Nyerges, and the most I could get on his present where abouts was that he was living somewhere in the Northern Virginia area. It would be great if someone on the list who lives in that area could have more success then I had in hunting him down. Most intriguing to me is the fact that he confirmed
shooting the Da Capo / TJ Cantrelli line up version of LOVE live in 1967. Love to see these shots. What follows are the LOVE references from the interview. All the best, KD

Interviewer:

“Being an LA concert going, photographer kind of guy, I took an educated guess and asked Tom if he ever saw or shot the legendary “Kings of LA Psychedelic Rock”, LOVE, who were led by the great Arthur Lee, who also happened to be a very close friend of Jimi Hendrix. Arthur wrote and produced “My Diary” (Revis Records, 1964) which marked Jimi’s first studio session release ever.

Tom remembers the band well, and sighs, “Ahhh, LOVE, yes indeed. I have pictures of them. I have pictures of the original line up. I saw them twice. Radio KBLA, I think gave a free concert at The Santa Monica Civic Center. Love was there as was The Count Five, Buffalo Springfield, all these groups - ……. Gene Clark after he’d left The Byrds. I think that’s even one of the first concerts that I went to, so that was just amazing. The Turtles were also there, and The Association. I don’t think my friend had his camera that day, but I did get pictures of Arthur Lee and LOVE because I saw him when they opened for Iron Butterfly at The Rose Palace in Pasadena. I have great shots of Arthur Lee with the tambourine at the microphone. I was just a huge fan of the band, and he was wonderful to photograph.

When I shot him, it was the first time I saw a musician who was really “out there”, so into the music, and that added to the composition – it also made me want to buy their next record. They were the first band that had black guys in it that weren’t playing soul music – they were playing rock; they were heavy duty !

The second time I saw them, they had added a couple of other members to the band (Go TJ Cantrelli ! KD), and all of a sudden there was this jazz element. This related to their general visual impact, which was very eclectic and was just fabulous.

So…………… there you have it folks. Anyone want to try and track down this Tom Nyerges ? He was interviewed by a Matthew Greenwald for Experience Hendrix back in 2000. Let us know how you get on. Keith D
