I recently took a trip to Arthur's old street in Laurel Canyon and viewed his old home overlooking L.A.
Quite the mysterious place if I say so. I want to check out the Vindicator house next, I understand it may be somewhere on Mulholland.
I went to that cool little market where all of the rockers got their drugs and groceries and Arthur beat the hell out of that guy who stole his money (per Stuart-Ware's book).

Anyone else ever checked out some of his old haunts ? |

Ahhh...memories of The Country Store
Go up LookOut or Wonderland all the way to the top. There will be a bluff up there where you can sit and enjoy the view. On clear day, you might still be able to see Catalina Island. |

Yeah, I can do that. I don't know when I will be able to send them, but I can take some pics of the store and the street as well as the houses. Its a very nice area and The Country Store is very cool.

It would be nice to live there one day. |

That sounds like a plan Torben.
I will begin to get ready for the locales etc. I will take a trip to the Castle as well as the Vindicator house and the Kirkwood Street home.
I am also going to that book store again to try and see if the rolled up Forever Changes billboard, in addition to the original Four Sail artwork is really there or if it is a myth. They also have a picture of Arthur on a horse upstairs as well for Black Beauty (so I have heard). I stopped in there the other day and made friends with a fellow who works there, and he suggested I speak with a guy named Dave. I would have gone in today but I had to drop off a job application and take some clothes to the tailors.
I will do it though.

The house at the top was where we rehearsed for Four Sail. the swimming pool comes into the house and you walk over a bridge to get to the one bedroom.. a great hang.. I took a girl to that spot on Mullholland after the concert that Love shared with Procal Harem and Chicago... there was, at that time, a big overstuffed couch sitting in the perfect view position... I remember that night like it was yesterday... clear and windy... warm with stars galore. I doubt if that night or clarity or couch still exist... but in my dreams, I remember. |

Oh, also, after the Whisky one night there was a party with a bunch of folks and Jimi Hendrex had come to see Love so he was there too... a VERY interesting night... this was in a board wood house about four houses north of the country store... on the curve. |

Jay, what were your flashes and impressions of Jimi? This must have been 1968, yes? Always cool to hear your colorful descriptions.

So the Arthur Lee homes timeline goes : Griffith Park, Kirkwood, and then Mulholland right ?

No the later home was in coldwater canyon on the top of a small hill.. this is where he kind of "came apart"... also the time of newport 69. Jimi was a unique guy... When talking , I asked him how he did "it"... he replied... " im not the driver, just the machine... my job is to open up.. not censor or edit and let it come through", paraphrasing as I dont remember the exact words.. J |

Thats good to know.
If I may ask, what do you mean "came apart" in terms of Arthur ? Was this the point where his behavior may have become a little more erratic from what you saw ?
I'm imagining that around this time he was a pretty articulate guy, who was into all sorts of interesting things. It seems interesting to me because I wonder about what kind of things he did as a young man ? Was he funny ? Eat Cheerios ?
He did something other than write music, what do you remember ?

Wasn't Arthur also living on Blue Jay Way at some stage, the house featured in "The Trip" |

Yes Eoin. I asked Arthur about it when I saw him after the gig at Town Hall in NYC in '04. It seemed to stir him positively as he looked right back at me and asked "Were you there?". I could actually see him remembering.
And by the way, the first house in the opening scene of The Trip was The Psychedelic Temple. Look very closely at the sign next to the door as Peter Fonda was knocking. The 'Temple' was quite famous back then.
No...I wasn't there either .
