Anyone into this once highly touted "American David Bowie" ? He was on the Elektra label, and his first record came out in 1973, his next was called Creatures of the Street in 1973. He died of AIDS without a trace in 1983.
Morrissey is a huge fan of his, and basically forced his record label to get the rights and make a compilation called Lonely Planet Boy.

I know you've asked about Jobriath before. I also go to another site that is basically read only, but you can e-mail the author, offer tid-bits if you like, and sometimes the author will place your e-mails on the site. In the past, I have offered information about Arthur (then touring with BL), Michael Stuart, and LA in general, as I lived there from May until Nov of '70. The author posted my e-mails, as LOVE was in the words of the author 'their own'. I got an e-mail from that site from a Johnathon Poletti that was asking me all about Jobriath. Somehow, I found some links on the net about Jobriath. One of these links was talking about Poletti, that this person's claim to be Jobriath's #1 fan and that he alone was responsible for releasing any recorded tunes of Jobriath was unsubstantiated. This site also said that this person was obsessive/compulsive about Jobriath. The site was a big slam on this person.
Here's a link to that site...

I believe that at the time of Jobriath's death, he was living in a small room in NYC high up and next to a billboard, with no utilities at all. He was totally destitude, and quite sick. Rumor has it that his corpse was found well after he died.
Google Jobriath...an interesting character to say the least.

Thank you Allan.
I do recall hearing something about a fraudulant Jobriath fan out there once upon a time. I actually have a copy of his first album and two copies of his second album from 1974, not 1973 (my mistake), however I don't listen to some of my records as they are purely collectible pieces for me.
I have heard rumors about a Jobriath biography, and even a documentary coming sometime soon. I guess in the wake of the Klaus Nomi documentary it would only be fitting.

I saw Jobriath at the Boarding House nightclub when his first LP came out. I had seen Bowie & Spiders From Mars a few years before but Jobriath & band were WAY OU THERE. I recall his lead quitarist was the strangest looking human being I had ever seen. |

Are you serious ?
You actually got to see Jobriath ? A friend of mine is completely interested in that dude, actually a few friends. If you don't mind telling, how was it when his album dropped ? I mean like what was the reactions that people had, and what was it like seeing this man ?

He was pretty loaded. Wore something like The Flash would wear. The film "Velvet Goldmine" had concert scenes that take me right back there. I was managing a large record store at the time and got to see a lot of artists for free. His LP totally bombed and everyone panned him as a Ziggy duplicate only more emphasis in the Gay angle. I kinda liked him but I knew he was doomed. |

Jobriath actually was in a sort of folkie band in the late 60s before he became Jobriath, they put one album out I think , but I can't remember the name. |

Pidgeon.
I actually have heard some of it. It is a self titled debut on the Decca label released in 1969. I found some of the instrumentation extremely fascinating.
I am very interested in all things Jobriath. For god's sake people his birth name was Bruce Wayne Campbell. That in itself is an amazing journey.
