Yeah we have a lot of bombast from this genre but interspersed throughout it's history and at the beginnings it was a noble melding of rock, classical, and jazz....and it took some mighty talent to pull off the best of prog.

Procol Harum, Deep Purple, King Crimson are all at the forefront and they made great music to my ears! Who are your favorites ...or your worst nightmares!!!

Here is the best Hungarian Prog Rockers of all time....around since 1962!!

OMEGA

Formed in Budapest in September, 1962 by the winds player László Benk#337; on organ and János Kóbor as a singer and rhythm guitarist, they initially performed covers of British and American rock songs, frequently changing the lineup of members. In 1967 Tamás Mihály came on bass, Gábor Presser joined on keyboards and began writing original music for the band (in 1968 György Molnár became a lead guitarist), contributing to the release of three LPs before leaving the band with József Laux, a drummer from 1962, to form Locomotiv GT in spring 1971. These first albums were heavily influenced by the music of The Beatles and psychedelic rock, but they also looked forward to the band's future more hard rock, then progressive and space-rock styles. After Presser and Laux's departure, the band found a new drummer (Ferenc Debreceni (later as Debreczeni) came from group Neoton) and appointed Benk#337; as the main keyboardsman, in August 1971 creating the current lineup, which has remained the same for over 30 years:

* János Kóbor ("Mecky"), lead vocals
* György Molnár ("Elefánt"), guitars
* László Benk#337; ("Laci"), keyboards, vocals
* Tamás Mihály ("Misi"), bass, vocals
* Ferenc Debreceni ("Ciki"), drums

Omega has achieved great international success through releases in multiple languages, and tours in England and Germany in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Their 1969 song "Gyöngyhajú lány" became an international hit, and was later covered by Griva on a 1987 self-titled album, with the title "Devojka biserne kose", and by Scorpions on a 1995 live release, with new lyrics and the title "White Dove" (the Hungarian title officially was translated as "Pearls In Her Hair").

Omega’s 16th. Hungarian studio release is 2006’s Égi jel: Omega ("Divine Sign: Omega"), and their latest English release is 1996’s Transcendent. In spring and summer of 2006, they performed their "EurOmega 2006" tour, including concerts in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Berlin and Basel.

As the first part of a trilogy the band released in autumn 2010 Omega Rhapsody.

Their debut album 'Together' is considered by fans to be one of the iconic Progressive Rock albums of all time. The band has been through a lot of line-up changes and records on recent years under 'Peter Panka's Jane', 'Werner Nadolny's Jane', and 'Klaus Hess's Jane' (a.k.a. 'Mother Jane'). One of their latest releases available in Germany is 'Voices' which has been critically acclaimed by the fans and critics alike. Jane can be seen in the 'Krautrock Meeting' concert film recently released on DVD. Alongside Eloy, Ramses and Birth Control, Jane are regarded as one of the best Krautrock groups with a devoted following which can be traced to Germany and Austria. Peter Panka (the main founder of Jane) died on June 28, 2007. The remaining members of the band toured Germany & Austria in 2007 alongside Fritz Randow and Arndt Schulz in memory of Peter Panka. Cool & Easy Records (Jane's official record label) has announced series of rarities titled 'The Lost Tapes' and a new DVD 'Phoenix' for future release. Tribute To Peter Panka a live concert DVD was released in 2008. A new album titled 'Traces' was released in December 2009.

ho ho ho lk..you are on it..I have a few of their very early records on Magyar pressings. They were at the forefront of rock in Eastern Europe during the 60's. Right, progressive and psychedelic! The crowds went crazy for them. Ps..I think they were one of the reasons the Wall fell years later!!..You can't keep rock down .........;-)...

So rocker...do you have Hungarian or English language releases? I usually don't take the time for "other language" albums but they are so compelling, instrumentally!

Generally,I have been impressed by at least the ambitiousness of most of art/progressive rock's creators.I usually enjoy a little bit of a thematic rock/classical tinge combined with almost gothic sounding lyrics.One purveyor however that was So bohemian,I think they may be just what you're talking about when you mention some who may have gone a bit too far,maybe even over the egde entirely.My stepfather introduced me to an outfit called Gentle Giant sometimme back in the '90's.I found their surreal/avant garde meanderings a little too weird eeven for my tastes.Believe me,I'm usually very graciously open minded and accpeting of at least new ideas in general,but this album was the equivalent of a portrait artist spitting colors randomly at his canvas.On the positive side there's old standbys Yes,ELP,ELO,and of course the Crimsons,but I often wonder why we didn't hear more out of Focus.Wail of a flute on "Hocus Pocus".(or is that WHALE of a flute

Back about the Genesis post.One of my faavorite recordings and certainly a real giant among the progressive is Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers".This was big when I was about ten or so.And then in the eighties came the tremendous "SO" lp with "Sledgehammer",which provided MTV with one of its five or so biggest videos ever.And can anyone help me out with a prog/new wave piece I detected in teh Molly Ringwald movie "Sixteen Candles">Some of the lyrics go something like "Hello,hello,hope you're feeling fine"in repition as its chorus.Its really driving me nuts trying to get a handle on this one.

"Mary Green" almost reminds me of Styx in their "Kilroy was Here" mode.Lightly and tasteful textured techno-pop.I believe Germany was at the forefront along with the US in the accompanying club craze involving the genre.An old friend of mine who was once stationed at a US army base there told me the nightlife there was resplendent with many gregarious revelers.

so yeah--

KRAUTROCK....

Krautrock is a generic name for the experimental music scenes that appeared in Germany in the late 1960s and gained popularity throughout the 1970s, especially in Britain. The term is a result of the English-speaking world's reception of the music at the time and not a reference to any one particular scene, style, or movement, as many krautrock artists were not familiar with one another. BBC DJ John Peel in particular is largely credited with spreading the reputation of krautrock outside of the German-speaking world.

Largely divorced from the traditional blues and rock & roll influences of anglo rock music up to that time, the period contributed to the birth and evolution of Electronic music, Ambient music, Alternative music and New Age music. Key artists associated with the tag include Can, Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Temple, Faust, Popol Vuh, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Neu!, and Kraftwerk.

Anyone remember a Kraut band called AMON DULL ?(or something like that)..kinda like a TANGERINE DREAM vibe..i still got "Lemminmania" by them on vinyl somewhere.
I never realy liked Genisis after "Selling England buy the pound" days......
another "prog rock" band i saw was CAMEL in London late 70,s ..i cant say i was over impressed, a freind had an album called "flight of the snowgoose" ...i will give any band a try though. Cant beat a live gig.

Those band names ceratinly inspire one's sense of urgency to listen!From the outset they seem to be saying "If we've put this much focus on just the name on the label,think of what inspirations you may find underneath".
