Signe Toly Anderson, an original vocalist for Jefferson Airplane, has died. According to a report from Psychedelic Sight, Anderson had been suffering from a series of health issues, and recently entered hospice care. She was 74 years old.
Anderson died on the same day as her former bandmate Paul Kantner, who passed away January 28th from multiple organ failure and septic shock.
In a statement, Jefferson Airplane co-founder Marty Balin wrote, ÒOne sweet Lady has passed on. I imagine that she and Paul woke up in heaven and said ÔHey what are you doing here? LetÕs start a band.ÕÓ
Anderson joined Jefferson Airplane shortly after their formation in 1965 and sang on their debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. However, following the birth of her first child, Anderson announced her departure from the band expressing an unwillingness to tour. She performed her final show with Jefferson Airplane at San FranciscoÕs Fillmore in October 1966, a recording of which was issued by Sony Music in 2010. Anderson was replaced in the band by Grace Slick.
Below, listen to Jefferson AirplaneÕs ÒChauffeur BluesÓ featuring Anderson on lead vocals. A strong vocalist and great lady.
