Bob Dylan-The Cutting Edge Vol 12 1965-1966

The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965Ð1966 is a set of recordings from 1965 and 1966 by Bob Dylan, released on Legacy Records in November 2015. It is mostly unreleased session demos and outtakes from recording sessions for the albums Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. Three different versions of the set were released simultaneously: a two-disc Best of edition in the packaging and format standard to the rest of the series after the first installment; a six-disc box set Deluxe edition similar in packaging to its counterpart from the previous Bootleg set; and an 18-disc limited Collector's Edition available exclusively by order from Dylan's official website. Stated on the website as being limited to 5000 copies total in manufacture ever, the Collector's Edition is unique as it includes "...every note recorded during the 1965-1966 sessions, every alternate take and alternate lyric."

despite George
Martin telling the lads they had their first number one upon the tracks completion
don't really miss Please Please Me on the compilation (theres a One set and a One plus set (double dvd with alternate mixes, etc) - just thrilled that Hey Jude can be watched in complete (on the Anthology release there was the odd voice over interrupting the flow

like Ringos video intro to the song too - talking up how the Beatles were playing the Frost tv theme!

Still Missing in action on dvd:

Let it be, Washington Coliseum, Compleat Beatles, etc etc!

Yes that's absolutely right Stewart. But I think that I'm right in saying that Record Retailer (which since early 1962 had also been supplying the listings for Record Mirror) was in fact the only chart which did not see Please Please Me at the top. Melody Maker, NME, Disc and most crucially, the BBC 'Pick of the Pops Chart' (which was averaged out from all four), all had the song as Number 1. And so we seem to have been left with two parallel universes!

re Please Please Me: At at the time different music papers - NME, Melody Maker, Disc, Record Mirror, Record Retailer etc had their own charts and Please Please Me was no 1 in some but not others. BBC also compiled its own charts. When the charts were 'unified' in 1969, the retrospective position was decided (for Guiness Book of Records etc purposes) to be : the NME chart positions up to 10 March 1960 were regarded as 'official' and those from Record Retailer were regarded as 'official' thereafter until 1969. Please Please me was presumably not no.1 in Record Retailer.

My next purchase will be Handel's Water Music. I am sure that the Beatles' 1 compilation will bring a lot of seasonal cheer to many people - and that is as it should be of course. But the track listing does reflect the US chart experience. Love Me Do was the only Beatles' single not to hit the UK top spot until Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane stalled unaccountably at Number 2 in early'67. Please Please Me in contrast spent three weeks in pole position - a very recent UK (ITV) documentary based on the Beatles 1 release shamefully sought to perpetuate the myth that this wasn't so.

I wonder if they will ever get around to putting out the whole catalogue in the new mixes - I must admit that my stereo box set from 2009 still sounds absolutely smashing. Happy New Year everyone - and may plenty of great music lie ahead of us all!

I received the Beatles 1 CD/Blueray for a gift. I would not have bought this because I have listened to each song 100's of times.
But, as I listened to this CD, each and every song btought back a vivid memory of a person, place or event. What i was doing when the song came out, who I was with or just my thoughts. So it is a jewel.
