Many thanks for the additional info, LK - I have often wondered about how different takes sometimes end up being used for CD versions. A favourite British prog group of mine has always been Gentle Giant. Their 1975 Freehand album was put out on CD in the States - and the sound bore very little resemblance to the UK equivalent - entirely different vocals being used on some tracks.

I remember being disappointed with Marrying Maiden but what a shame that Soapstone Mountain is cut short at the end of the Tanglewood concert.

Yes, ashrob...Marrying Maiden and the third LP were great disappointments, but then they lost Linda on vocals, a strong influence it seems.

La Flamme was quite the talent on the fiddle!!

I have the original LP...the very first pressing on the Columbia 2-eye label, J9. It was released in 1969 BEFORE White Bird became a hit in 1970. The album was then remastered with what sounds like completely different takes on most tracks. The original pressing is pretty rare and I like it even better than the second incarnation, though likely the 2nd remastered version is what you have on the the 2-CD set.

I believe there were copyright issues so the album art had to be changed with the reissue on CD.

It is worth finding the original which is likely on the CBS orange label in the UK--a very cool gatefold (at least I hope it was gatefold in the UK) with an amazing original mix.

Catch it if you can!

White Bird...likely the remix but beautiful still. Worth many listens!

Thanks LK - it is interesting to hear this slightly faster arrangement of their masterpiece composition. I do wish though that the original (and magnificent) cover could be restored to the CD version of their self-titled debut. I've got a 2CD edition of their first two which is all in black.
