ECLECTION-"ECLECTION" 1968 (ELEKTRA RECORDS)
A lost treasure from the UK that had a California sunshine folk rock sound--strings and great female/male vocal harmonies...unusual for a British band. Anyone have this ol' gem lying around?
And also one of the few British groups signed by Elektra. They were a Jac Holzman favorite.

One of the few British acts on the Elektra roster during that era, their sole album sounded unusually Californian for a British group of the period. Although based in England, Eclection were actually formed by one Englishman, one Canadian, one Norwegian and two Australians. Creatively, the group were dominated by guitarist/singer George Hultgreen (who wrote most of their songs) and guitarist/singer Michael Rosen (who wrote the remainder of the songs and usually took the male vocal leads).
Eclection, like several Elektra albums of the period, matched some pretty folk-rock melodicism with slightly arty orchestrated production and a psychedelic tinge. The lyrics and harmonies often evoked blissful, drifting romps through the clouds, with a youthful naivete and exuberance.
Kerrilee Male, one of the group's strongest assets, left the band in late 1968, a few months after the release of Eclection.
The group replaced her with American folk singer Dorris Henderson and did put out a subsequent single, a cover of Kaleidoscope's "Please." But the group disbanded in October 1969, after keyboardist Poli Palmer (who had just come in to replace Michael Rosen) left to join Family.

Sandy Denny was, of course, of Fairport Convention and early Strawbs--then later of Fotheringay with Trevor...

I have the album on vinyl. As mentioned, kind of a cross between Fairport and west coast sunshine. It's a better than average album but at time a bit overproduced. Not sure if that's the right word. Some of the brass, in spots, is a bit much and takes a little away from the natural beauty of some of the tracks. I'd have to listen to it again to remember which tracks but my overall impression after several listens was good but could have been much better.
Intersting to read that Poli Palmer joined them for a bit. He had quiet an intersting history. Original member of Deep Feeling, which spawned into Traffic. He was involved in some good projects. Blossom Toes toward the end of their career, involved in Gordon Jackson's "Thinking Back" lp, was with Family as mentioned, helped out on an obscure lp by Robin Scott. I bet his story, in his words, would be interesting to read. |

"Watch The Stars" (1967) by Dorris & John has been finally reissued.
Coincidentally (to LoVE fans) the bonus track is "Message To Pretty"...can't say if that has been covered much by any artist.
My favorite album of John's (due to the fact that he SINGS) is
"FARRO ANNIE" (1971)....Dorris appears on vocals (backup harmonies).

That 1968 Eclection LP is a sweet one. I'd have loved to have heard the band with Dorris Henderson singing, though. I've never heard her albums from when she sang in the duo with John Renbourn, before the formation of Pentangle, I believe (at least a couple of albums, right?). Topped off by the fact that she'd also been in the thick of the Greenwich Village folk scene, hanging with Fred Neil, Dave Van Ronk and Dylan, among others. Pretty cool that she made it from the village to England in time to sing for a band as good as Eclection. Just one more artist I've long been aware of, but have yet to have had the opportunity to actually hear... |

Thanks LK - been visiting the Love messageboards for years but you have touched a nerve with Eclection who were sorely underrated.
Eclection great live.
Dorris was reading a book in the Bar on the one occasion. I asked her about a new LP. She said they were working on it but of course it never appeared.
Have seen Poli Palmer several times playing with Roger Chapman. |

I would agree with Torb, that they have a Fairport sound...with a bit of California in there. It can be heard that Fotheringay was the perfect next step for Trevor.

I wonder if they toured the US or were they too short lived..I'm guessing that to be the case. They didn't survive long after the release of this fine LP.

I would agree with Torb, that they have a Fairport sound...with a bit of California in there. It can be heard that Fotheringay was the perfect next step for Trevor.

A record that takes you by surprise.
Sure does..wasn't aware of this one..a gem...I'd like to add it to my collection.
and those are real good pix of Fairport...one of the great bands still making music I'd say. It's like they're eternal just like those ye olde English folk songs they seem to keep mining. |
