THE ADVANCEMENT-1969.
Released on Philips

you all may like this jazzy rock instrumental album. I hear some DOORS here in their jazzier moments.

"PAINFUL STRUGGLE"...STARTS ALMOST HAUNTINGLY SLOW, AND THEN WITH THE UPRIGHT BASS, GAINS QUICK MOMENTUM...THE WHOLE ALBUM IS HERE...

Advancement was a group of Jazz musicians out of Los Angeles. The two band leaders, bass player Lou Kabok and percussionist Hal Gordon got their start with Gabor Szabo before breaking out on their own in 1969 forming Advancement and releasing this, their first album. The first two tracks, Juliet and Painful Struggle, are very dark sounding Jazz pieces, with the latter being the better of the two. Painful Struggle begins with some vibes playing, then a long bass bridge played with a bow, before picking up the pace for a Jazz piece backed by percussion. Grass Mass is even better with more vibes playing and a lighter mood to it. There’s also a long drum and percussion break in Moorish Mode. Hobo Express and Fall Out see the band venturing out into Rock. The former mixes Blues and Jazz with more standout vibes work, while the latter is on some Hard-Rock-Psyche tip, making it more to my liking.

Art Johnson and Lynn Blessing used to be involved with Judee Sill, and played on "Heart Food" and the last demo album.
Blessing was Judee's spiritual advisor, and was a collector of esoteric spirituality books like Blavatsky,etc...
The Advancement was supposed to be Gabor Szabo's group, but he didn't show up to the session and Johnson took his place.

Released just one album in 1969.After collaborating with Gabor Szabo on such superb efforts as More Sorcery and Dreams, bassist Louis Kabok and drummer Hal Gordon further embraced jazz-rock fusion under the Advancement aegis, issuing their sole LP in 1969. The opening "Juliet" establishes a dark, moody atmosphere immediately bolstered by the intriguing "Painful Struggle," with its eerie vibes and Kabok's extended bass bridge. "Moorish Mode" is Gordon's star turn, highlighted by an impressively restrained drum break. But it's the most overtly rock-influenced cuts that make Advancement worth seeking out, in particular "Fall Out," an impressively heady melange of jazz, hard rock, and psychedelia.
