The Kinks
Ultimate Compilation of the 'Great Lost Kinks Album' Rarities
(Rare and unreleased recordings from 1963-1970)

Tracks 1-14 make up the original Reprise album from 1973...

AKA "Klarifying the Great Lost Kinks Album Konfusion"
or "The Only GLKA You'll Ever Need"
Miscellaneous studio outtakes, varying sound quality, mostly very good to excellent
mp3 @ 192-320
Custom Artwork Included

This compilation was made to sort out the various bootleg recordings that are all some variation of the Great Lost Kinks Album (GLKA), containing many of the same outtakes and rarities. This compilation combines all the unique songs from numerous of these similar 'rarities compilations' in one collection.
Disc 1 includes all of the original 1973 GLKA, as well as the additional tracks that were planned to comprise Dave Davies abandoned 'solo' album (Dave's songs done by the Kinks) from around this time (1969), dubbed 'The Album That Never Was' by later boots. Disc 2 is composed of the other miscellaneous demos, outtakes, and alternate versions of songs from various sessions from 1963-1970. Now, what this compilation does NOT tackle, are all of the different BBC, radio and TV show sessions from these periods, as that is a whole 'nother mess of overlapping boots covering these types of tracks. Anyway, for this compilation (compiled from such known bootlegs as 'GLKA extended versions', 'Neue Revue GLKA', 'Rare and unreleased recordings 1963-1970', 'Kinky Boots', 'To Kinkdom Kome', 'Four Respected Gentleman', and other variations), I've taken the best sounding versions of each unique track and put them all together with no duplication. Now, of course, many of these songs were eventually released as bonus tracks in various reissues and compilations (although usually in somewhat different mixes or versions), but this compilation includes all the original bootleg track versions.

great songs. wretched production!!

I remember listening to Something Else once and just being bothered by how loud the drums were mixed

Still long for a new Kinks album. All the later Kinks albums (Phobia, The Road, UK Jive) had great tracks on them (Down All the days (till 1992), Scattered, Only a dream) but the band never really finished well. I think their last tour they weren't really selling out places and people were calling out requests like "Plastic Man"

Arthur could be their best album. I'm always struck by how emotional that last track was, you get the sense that Ray and Dave and John and Mick were crying why they were cutting that. Its just a shame that Julian Doyle never did the film for the album, as its a sad story (Arthur emigrating to Australia, not really owning a place of his own but a Shangri La, having the kids go

I think in real life Arthur raised Ray and was rather a strict disciplinarian. "Rosie won't you please come home?" was about his daughter, how the family missed her having left for Australia

Theres no England anymore

if you're listening to an old cd of Something Else (on Castle?)

yeah......once...righto....one learns about sound at times.........

I understand the sound quality is better than all those wretched bootlegs we've had to resort to over the years

I'd sell my soul for a burn

I still listen to my Kinks Great Lost Kinks Album boot to listen to some of Daves songs. I like Mr Reporter, though some of the songs (Are you ready girl?) aren't so hot

You can kind of understand why Dave didn't want to keep with it, despite having a solo hit with Death of a Clown.

Strange stuff has turned up on boots since then (like the Neue Revu Great Lost Kinks Album version) - RAY singing "Mr Reporter"
odd soundtrack stuff like the Virgin Soldiers...

Don't know if the Long Distance Piano Player show that Ray worked on has ever turned up (this is around the late 60s, around the time they were leaving Reprise for RCA after Lola vs the Moneygoround)

By this time Ray was writing to order rather well, doing songs like "Where did my spring go?" for tv (a show called Where Was My Spring, I believe)
and doing the (rather wonderful) soundtrack for the Percy film

WOnderful to have Face To Face and SOmething Else in 2CD packages - they both sound wonderful. Heaven help you if you're listening to an old cd of Something Else (on Castle?) as it sounds rather wretched

The only thing worse were the cut out tapes from the 80s of Village Green!

The 3CD Village Green set thankfully compiles most of the Great Lost Album tracks, though I think they leave off Where Did My Spring Go?

and maybe they leave off the odd Dave track (Groovy Movies)

Of course I'm sure there are alternate mixes of tracks - think Groovy Movies was even a single!

along with Drivin, Starstruck.. but did they ever chart? NO!

Ray......He's got a CBE (Commander of British Empire)...wha? no Sir??? We'll see him soon singing Waterloo in a few days at the Olympics. For 68, he says his health isn't so good. I hope he'll be ok. He's one of the aging musical Kings and he's given us a legacy of great songs.

How the Kinks got their name ?.....is up for debate, but Ray's comment is telling.....just like Ray.

Around this period, The Ravens decided on a new, permanent name: The Kinks. Numerous explanations of the name's genesis have been offered. In Jon Savage's analysis, "[They] needed a gimmick, some edge to get them attention. Here it was: 'Kinkiness'—something newsy, naughty but just on the borderline of acceptability. In adopting the 'Kinks' as their name at that time, they were participating in a time-honoured pop ritual—fame through outrage."[21] Manager Robert Wace related his side of the story: "I had a friend. ... He thought the group was rather fun. If my memory is correct, he came up with the name just as an idea, as a good way of getting publicity. ... When we went to [the band members] with the name, they were ... absolutely horrified. They said, 'We're not going to be called kinky!'"[21] Ray Davies' account conflicts with Wace's—he recalled that the name was coined by Larry Page, and referenced their "kinky" fashion sense. Davies quoted him as saying, "The way you look, and the clothes you wear, you ought to be called the Kinks."[21]

..."I've never really liked the name," Ray stated.

No matter how you shake it, the KINKS made some amazing music.

Interestingly, the Kinks albums didn't chart really well in the US except for the US-only release Kinks-Size in 1965..charting at #13. The rest look like a LoVE story.

Of course they were much more well known here than LoVE, and the singles were the big hits and really propelled them in the USA. Even then they never had number one hit...only going as high as #7...and only four singles in the top 20!

This surprised me a bit, because even then in 1965 the KINKS were tops for me! I thought they were TOPS for everyone! They got tons of airplay and TV spots so they were everywhere.

I think their rep has grown immeasurably over the years though....soooo influential.

Oh yeah...their USA release "Greatest Hits" reached #9 on US charts so that did well too.

I think the 3CD for the Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society is also worth checking out, as that has "Micks Underpants" and other tracks like Dave's "Creeping Jene"

I think that might only be available on import though - the book on that album is also worth going (published by 33 1/3)

LOVE the ending of the album, with the British fanfare after the close of "People take pictures of each other"!

did anyone ever buy those wretched Spanish cassettes of Kinks albums - YIKES!

...just great to see all this Kinky stuff unearthed! I have alot of "work" to do...
Joe Morris Posted - 05/01/2012 : 02:10:01
what? no "Mick Avorys Underpants"?!

incidentally Daves Unfinished Business release is different in the UK and the US (which features live versions)

Same as To The Bone - the UK version has "Waterloo Sunset"
curiously the US version does not (but DOES have an extra disc!

of course the place to start with the Kinks is Kinks Kronikles
