Probably one of rock's five most tragic figues-Nirvana's tremoundously gifted artistic visonary,Kurt Cobain.Just as rock listeners and critics alike perceived the creative industry almost completely devoid of any hope of any new direction with any semblemnce of lasting influence whatsoever,"Nevermind" provided what has NOW proven to be the last highly measurable facsimile of revolution in the medium.I say "facsimle" because in manay circles it is considered merely America's long over due answer to the British Punk craze of the 1970's-early eighties, but it did offer its own uniquely explosive twist, particularly Cobain's searingly poignant re-invention of rock lead guitar. His situation boils down to the conceptual peramters of a highly quotable quote from the also oft-troubled John Lennon.Joh once said "Genius is pain".

5 SOULFULL TRACKS FOR ACHANGE

captain america and billy Posted - 21/06/2011 : 20:39:21
The Doors were absoloute masters of the long song with "The End" and the aforementioned "Roadhouse Blues".As long as they ARE,its always difficult for my ears to adapt to the next song on classic rock radio,as if I wanted "Blues" to rock on for another two or three minutes. Not every artist si so successful.Me and my friends kind of like Jackson Browne pretty generally, but we hardly ever kept one of his longer grooves on to the very end.I feel the passions runs out of gas a little prematurely.Good choice with Pink Floyd's "Saucerful".Another of their interesting long ones is "Interstellar Overdrive".In fact, the entire "Wall" epic is essentially one great REALLY long "song".You know what turns up in many variously themed tv and movie spots and always serves the atmosphere of premise at least reaonably suitably."The Velvet Underground's "Venus and Furs".And I recently saw an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" where the producers chose to use,of ALL things,George Harrison's "Ballad of Frankie Crisp" from the mmonumental "All Things Must Pass" l.p.I haven't actually listened to too many cds lately, but I have enjoyed hearing many tunes by classic artists by watching the tube. One episode of "My Name is Earl" actually incorporated the Strawberry Alarm Clock's "Rainy Day,Mushroom Pillow"!And I DO think that the use of the Who's bombastic "Won't Get Fooled Again" as the theme to one of those CSI shows is perfect. The signature Roger Daltrey scream at the start of the final stanza fits in well with the concept of shocking fictionakl crime scenes.I know it's a bit of an obtusely morbid thing to say,but don't ya think?

Hey LK

I love "No Other" and Silver Raven was one of the first songs I learnt on the guitar (it's a three chord number so not a bad one to start with)

Allan

Animals is up there with Forever Changes for me and I think I'd like "Dogs" played at my funeral (mainly to annoy the family to keep them in their seats for 17 minutes!!!)

You know those album sides you may as well consider as good as one frigen track for all it's intents and purposes?I've recently rediscovered the "Apple Jam" disc of George Harrison's "All Things Must Pass".What a jam indeed!Ringo,Eric Clapton,Billy Preston,I think Gary Brooker from Procol Harum might be there. Many more. Also been returning,as I probably ever will to Charlie Rich's "Most Beautiful Girl in the World",a timlessly charming tear jerker.Always seems a bit short ever listen though. One final whole side contender.Side two of the Moody Blues' "Threshold of a Dream".Enchanting and mezmorizing.I would, however, have made one program change.I think the flow would have been even more successful if they had placed "Dear Diary" from side one in place of "Lazy day".which is nice, but for me it interrupts things just a bit in some conceptual way I can't quite put my finger on.Many people haev complained that "When I'm Sixty Four" may not have really belonged on "Sgt. Pepper" AT ALL!But at least with that one,the reason is rather apparent. Also, recently struck gold again at the thrift with Fleetwood Mac's pre-"Rumors" self titled 1975 effort.Always hopelessly romanticized by Stevie Nicks' lovely "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" compositions. Most certainly one of rock's more overlooked writers along with bandmate Christine McVie who scores wonderfully with "Over My Head".At least in her time with Mac,she relly had a handle on scoring music beautifully with lyrics and vice versa.

You know what popped into my head when I was thinking about the topic about that rock, brass combo Lemonade Kid posted? The whole discussion, which included my mentions of the jazzy sounds of Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears, made me think of "Vehicle" by the Ides of March. This was one hell of a piece.Fierce driving breaks with stern lyrical delivery amidst a wash of brilliantly executed brass rock.Bit of funky guitar as well.Great God in heaven, you know I love it!!
