Posted - 24/03/2011 : 19:25:12 "Freak Out" instantly became one of my favorite albums when I first heard it just a couple of years ago. Well ahead of its time musically as well as conceptually. Now I'm an enormous Beatles fan, but I must admit that this and Velvet Underground's first album are at least two reasons why some believe the Fabs garnered a little too much credit for themselves for having changed pop music as art. Of course many also cite "Forever Changes". Staying on the counterculture course, I think some critics were a little harsh on the Stones' "Majesties Request". I'll grant you its no acid rock tour-de-force, but there are a few captivating moments. I've always adored the other-worldness of "2000 Light Years From Home". Besides, Mick,Keef and Co. knew the genre was really their forte, they just wanted to say they got their two cents in about the whole "head" thing. In fact, even the Monkees indulged and called their project just that! |
