Posted - 24/03/2011 : 14:41:06 It's quite possible it might have been semi career suicide. Just remember, Peter Tork hung out in the same underground folk circles while Mike Nesmith shared many of the same qualities as musician and vocalist. Sure Stills' obviously superior songwriting skills would eventually garnered him huge notoriety as it has, but the reason I say SEMI career suicide is because he would have carried the stigma as being lucky to have been chosen for the Monkees all his life. I do realize that the Monks were all very talented, but with only a slightly varied committee of persons choosing applicants for the NBC job, the four roles could easily have been filled by four different people entirely. Mickey Dolenz and Davy Jones might have found other t.v. work and were mostly actors anyway, but it's quite possible Tork and Nesmith might have been better off not getting the gig. Maybe one or both of them would have landed in the Springfield! |

Posted - 17/03/2011 : 02:45:52 was just watching the Head film (Criterion - 2010 release)
with the commentary on by all 4 Monkees
its interesting - Tork is talking about his appearance in the "As we go along" video, how he clipped his sideburns in a tribute to Stills, who ressembled
talks a little about how Stills got him the part in the Monkees, when Stills was first approached by Bob Rafelson and was turned down, put forward his friend from the Village's name Peter Tork
and the rest is history
great great stuff - the commentary on the Criterion disc is wonderful, with all the 4 Monkees being witty and talking about how great a film Head is, though it was a commercial disaster
(maybe a film version of the tv show would've worked better financially!) |

NO, never, allan!
I do believe that Papa Nez would have made it anyway! Maybe without the shadow of the Monkees he would have been even more successful?! Or not....but this Monkees track really shows where he would be going soon!!
