In a groundbreaking, over the top, Flying Burritos style....Any one know 'em? Guitarist Jimmy Baker is an icon no one remembers...hung at Zappa's cabin...with Morrison, Hendrix, Carl Franzoni, Stash,Timothy Leary, Zappa....in Laurel Canyon. the master tapes for his 1968 band's recording, Bushy Clumps, was lost in a flood in Topanga Canyon in 1976. He is still playing and out there and GREAT!!
Red Rhodes is all over this Possum classic that never got the success it deserved.....
After wrapping up his 1968 mega-watt experiment with band "Bushy Clumps" - playing what Jimi Hendrix described as 'heavy metal bluegrass' - Jimmy Baker began stretching the boundaries of his Country music roots yet again with a group called "POSSUM". Released by Capitol Records in 1970, the album was intended to explore the full range of Jimmy's creativity. But trouble broke out when Capitol exec's fell a little too in love with his zany, acoustic, slack-jawed ditties, and began removing the more brawny and serious compositions from the roster. Jimmy fought hard to keep this song ("Hard To Be") on the album as proof of what his crazy Country band was really doing 40 years ago.
So here is a free download of the out-of-print POSSUM lp from 1971 on Capitol---I believe it is actually 1970 but hey, I am not questioning "Red Telephone"...always has such great downloads!.....enjoy http://www.redtelephone66.com/2010/06/possum-possum-1971/
