Posted - 28/01/2011 : 20:00:30 Underrated by many or completely overlooked...truly one of the greats. "Sunshine Superman" being considered an all time Top 100 Album by most.
A really overlooked album is "Cosmic Wheels"...I have a promo vinyl with an original MIMEOGRAPH(google it, kids)insert....remember those pre-xerox copying machines?....anyway, it states a warning to DJs for radio play, that listeners may object to offensive language with one track...."Intergalactic Laxative". But listen first to the title track...

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 22:19:22 I have wonderfull memories of Donovan's records, (Sunshine Superman), when they were new on the radio in the 60s. Magic and cool vibes were there. I can always return there when I listen to his stuff.

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 21:46:27 Donovan also played "Atlantis" on a Simpsons episode |

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 17:03:47 You know I was watching Goodfellas recently and almost foprgot that Donovan's "Atlantis" was in there. Scorcese put it in that notorious Billy Batts scene at the bar. I always wondered what Don thought of that one but I figure he had to have given Scorcese permission to use it there! |

Posted - 30/01/2011 : 18:21:52 Fantastic! Let us know about it...though Donovan still has the voice so I am sure it will be great. I am so happy that Donovan has found his audience again as Arthur did later in life. A few decades ago Donovan was playing hotel lounges in the US and I felt he deserved better. FANTASTIC!
It is so wonderful that our greatest 60's artists are having the chance to reclaim their complete opus albums in front of adoring audiences.....with the halls filled with the old AND the young-- it gives me hope for the younger generations!!

Actually, "Sunshine Superman" is the most highly esteemed album, and most groundbreaking. First album to openly sing of use of acid and "the love drugs"...innovative use of never before dreamed of instrumental accompaniment & very interesting, unusual arrangements and his guitar work as usual, is very intricate & influential
Donovan is performing the Sunshine Superman album at the Royal Albert Hall June 3 with the London Contemporary Orchestra under the baton of John Cameron, arranger for many of the tracks on that and subsequent albums, including Legend of a Girl Child Linda you've linked to. http://bandweblogs.com/blog/2010/11/03/donovan-performs-sunshine-superman-at-the-royal-albert-hall-june-3-2011/
Have booked the gig and am really looking forward to it. |

Posted - 29/01/2011 : 18:35:58 A few very nice tracks from one of my favorites--"HMS Donovan"....the Pee Song is a poor example of the content of HMS & the album is to be commended for what he Attempted AND achieved.....and my favorite album art.
A cover of a traditional folk song...."Henry Martin"....love this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GA2TbN6tuDM
Celia Of The Seals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UajRWV7hjus&feature=related
The Little White Road....brilliant finger picking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3TUt5mCiwA&feature=related

Posted - 29/01/2011 : 01:58:22 gotta listen to Summer Day Reflection Songs now, haven't listened to that 2cd yet you know, the best way for a newbie to start might be the recent remaster of A Gift from a flower to a garden (from 2009 - they had to lose the original cover though!) or the Troubadour 2cd collection, though that might be out of print. One of my favorite tracks by Don is off that (Dark-Eyed Blue Jean Angel) and thats from 1976
Sutras, never grabbed me too much, cool as it was that he was covering Poe (!) though I was impressed by his recent book Hurdy Gurdy Man covering his 60s period.
The one Don I really want to pick up is the album Mellow Yellow as that influenced Nick Drake from what I understand, when he was in Aix in 1968 he played that constantly, and that was when he started writing songs..
Dunno about "Pee song" and stuff - that was from HMS; I think the only thing that interested me about that album was the fact that I have a cd of Mccartney playing songs with Donovan, and they were trying out songs, and Don was doing songs like "The sun and the moon" from that album and Paul was trying out "Blackbird". Lotta fun that session at Pauls home!
