This great final album in a trio of amazing albums by Buffalo Springfield
was released in July 1968. I listened to this one all summer long.
Even with just Steve and Richie completing most of the album themselves,
it is one of my all time favorites. Give me a better by a whole band...
The opening track....I knew we had a good one for the summer daze!
Broke my heart when I figured out the cover, but we'll always have the
Summer of '68!!

Bufflo Springfield was my summertime band in 66-67-68 and forever!!
Sounds as good as ever & watching the old gold and purple Atco label spinning
round and round...another perfect example of why NOT to sell your
record collection!!!

Help me Buff...didn't Springfield meet Rusty who was playing in a band
that opened for them while touring Colorado? Made an impression on
Richie for sure. Another album and we would have likely seen some pedal steel.

in my head there is a pedal opening that one, but then POCO did it too.
As Bob said, somehow Buff got the feel of the pedal steel without NEEDING one!
BUT WAIT! THERE IS a steel so to speak here! James Burton on DOBRO! Does that count?!!

and btw what's JD doing these days anyway???.....I'm sure he's doing session work..and while we're on the steel...who the steel player for Patsy Clines's records? Most steel players have their unique "sound" and ou can just tell how different the notes come out on her records compared to say Sneaky's style and Drake's and Emmons and Speedy's and Franklin's and Red" and you can add'em on!.....
Steel intro.....'In South Carolina rhere are many tall pines'...
And the reason why Buff S didn't have a steel????...maybe Rusty was workin' on the railroad at the time?????.... ..

I had always felt that the B.Springfield sound has a pedal steel guitar-like way. There is always that sound that said, Buffalo Springfield, in the first bar! Sure, I'm a big Pedal Steel fan.....and yet hear a bit of the spirit of pedal steel in their, and guitar style. The Loving Spoonful had that sound, too, and don't get me started on the pedal steel guitar, 'cause I'm gonna never stop typing my enthusiasm and praise of the greats of pedal steel and their recordings we all love! (J.DEE MANESS, SNEAKY PETE, PETE DRAKE, ....
but the Buffalo Springfield did manage (thanks to the cosmic creations of Stills and Young) to transcend the need for that instrument, and bend the rules a bit, and make that magic sound from another way.

Nowadays Clancy can't even sing they tell me!
I have a demo of that by Neil on a WFMU premium cd - good stuff
Shame the Buffalo Springfield box set didn't have everything in one place. Good band for one that lasted 5 minutes! |

A fine pedal steel guy in the Buff lineup...we had enough rivalry with
Steve and Neil without adding ONE more to the mix!! Besides, they were
quite perfect for me in this case. I never miss a steel. CNS and
the rest found a place for the pedal in later recordings anyway.

A couple of my favorite Neil songs were not sung by Neil,
due to either his confidence or the producer's confidence (or lack
thereof) in Neil's vocal strength,
It is great to hear Neil sing On The Way Home and Clancy on the first
live recording after the breakup of Buff....the Sugar Mtn Archive
Series. That is kind of a bittersweet document for me, even now,
knowing that it was one of his first solo concerts just before his first album
was released. The commentary about Buff, tuning and the stage madness
the first car he bought with "residuals", the story behind Out Of My Mind,
& so on, are as good as a book about Buffalo Springfield. Neil sure had
a sense of history. How many other artist's (besides the DEAD) recorded
so much of their live concert history. If only Love had.....sigh.
so...and FOUR DAYS GONE is such a beautiful protest song...a real favorite for us.

hey lk..with Buff..interesting that they didn't make use of the steel..not sure if they did at all. Maybe they thought it was going to limit them to the "country" genre?? |

Great topic, LK.
"Do I Have To Come Right Out and Say It?" off the first album. Still one of the best. I read somewhere that they weren't happy at all with the sound of the first album, but I like its sparseness and simplicity.

the inseparable Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt Peppers!
lk... I swear I think at one time! I didn't miss much back then (at least I don't think I did!) As I'm getting more and moe into my colection, I've noticed that I think people have been taking some 5-finger discounts on my watch! Some of the records I know I have had before and now my mind will tell me what they are shorlty when I have to figure out if i had them at one time!!...;-)....

I found it interesting J9, to read of "Hour Of Not Quite Rain" in John's
Buff bio. It is the only Buff song recorded, but NOT totally written by a member of Buffalo
Springfield. The tune was by Richie of course, but the lyrics were provided by
a winner of a Springfield lyrics contest at a local radio station! Richie
was the only member who felt obligated to his fans to complete the song
for an album. Silly contest yes, but he did it! It was one of my favorites
then, and still is. ...Even knowing the history... now.
Pretty Girl Why, is another fave.

Strangely, I played my CD copy only two weeks ago....I Am A Child, The Hour Of Not Quite Rain and Pretty Girl Why shone especially brightly. You're right LK, they were cutting some great music at that point even if they were not quite functioning as a group. I would like though, to see the album get a proper overhaul. The European edition doesn't even have a booklet....just a thin piece of card. |
