THe debate rages at Freed's that this concert never took place--right
after the Miami incident.

Hey, Philly mate....was there? You saw two DOORS shows.

You said that the first was right after the Miami arrest.
Do you have ticket stubs...anything that would show you were there
and that it is not just a memory glitch by Densmore, as most attest to
at Freed's. There are no posters, flyers, ads that we know of.

So was it really in June of '67, then '68 & '70 that the Philly shows
happened?

HELP!!

Review by Ida, taken from "LA Woman Confidential" at www.idafan.com;
[i]"My sister in Philadelphia grudgingly agreed to obtain me tickets for this show at a place called Toppi's Sports Arena. However, she refused to buy me only one ticket and insisted on a pair, to ensure that I didn't drive to that section of Philadelphia alone. This 7,000 capacity sports venue meant going into a rougher area of Philly. The tickets were deep red in color, and showed a $6.50 price.

Our seats were pretty close to the stage but on the side, up off the floor. I remember that as soon as the band hit the stage, we were up and over the barrier between our section and the floor to get in front of the stage. Joanie and I managed to be just a few bodies back from the edge, packed like sardines and jostling for position. I was positioned just left of center toward Ray's side of the stage. This was the closest I had been yet, and I enjoyed that show tremendously. In hindsight I realized that this was the most dis-spirited of all the shows I was to see.

Jim's physical look had changed dramatically for this post-Miami show. No leather pants: his pants were light colored pin-stripes. He also behaved differently than at the Asbury Park show, just 12-1/2 months earlier, more subdued, like his heart wasn't really in it. However, at that time the thrill of being so very close to the stage outweighed any consideration of the band's mood that night, six months after the Miami incident. I didn't have a good understanding of the impact that Miami had on the band.

Greg Shaw's book, The Doors On The Road indicates that there were two shows that night. I don't remember this, but it must be true. I do remember getting home very, very late so I assume we were at the late show. That section of my ticket stub was torn off so I'll never know for certain.

The early show's set list is: Back Door Man <> Break On Through <> When The Music's Over <> The Soft Parade <> Light My Fire
To my knowledge, there is no record of the late show's set list."

Some links also claim The Doors did 2 gigs at The Arena...'68 and '69. I only remember '68.

That same site lists The Arena gig as 1969.

The poster for the "67 Philly show at Town Hall"...gives ticket
locations at "Record Mart Stores on such streets as 1527 Chestnut,
Penn Records, The Button Tree on 10th, Pearlman's in Doylestown...."
do they sound right for Philly? The poster is pretty cool and has
JUST the Doors on the bill?...a "Batoff-Warfield production".....
Could Town Hall have been in a suburb or even over the border in NJ?

and you could be right about the '69 concert as a ticket stub only
means they were sold, not used.

I'm gona keep pursuing this at Freed's just to stir the pot!

Thanks Allan. Turns out (from the "historians" at Freed's) that
there was a concert in 1967--June 18, 1967 at Town Hall, and August 4,
1968 at the Arena, one on Sept. 19, 1969, and finally the May 1, 1970
concert at The Spectrum.
Hopefully Ed will upload the poster and ticket stubs here for us all
to see.

I think the 2nd band was The Soul Survivors-at least that's what keeps popping up in my mind . Then The Doors was the top bill. I have a copy of the original famous Tour Guide from that tour (but it's currently misplaced -I'll find it). I made a copy of it for The Freedom Man and he traded me the Spectrum gig of The Doors in 1970 on CD. I also have another copy of it in hand (I'll find that original-now I'm almost hell-bent .

I thought it was right after the famous indecent exposure in Miami, but I think that event happened in '69.

I never heard of a gig by The Doors in 1967 in Philly...period. I was very active on the concert scene from late '66 through '73. There was NO Doors gig in Philly in '67.

So '68 and '70...for sure!!

Hope that helps and sorry for the delay

Allan

Great, alan. May I post this at Freed's site. Very Helpful.
