A long time ago, say late 50's early 60's. the featured instrument in rock and roll was the sax. The solos, the instrumentals were mostly a wailing sax. Not only did that vanish, I don't even know who these players were. As a matter of fact, I can only name a couple who became famous, Getz, Coltrane. Did they all gravitate to jazz, out of the mainstream. Most of the Coasters hits featured a sax as did the instrumental Tequila. I guess the quitar completely took over.
But I think it has been overused. Whats wrong with more horns, the sax,clarinet or trumpet. I miss that sound. One of the reasons The Beatles liked That Rock and Roll Music, was the wailing sax. As we all know Love used the horns. I'd love to hear that sound rejuvenated instead of guitar, guitar, guitar. |

Ok, it was still over thirty years ago but the band 'X Ray Spex' , recently reformed, always had a sax very prominant in their sound.
As for horns there's quite a lot of examples, but my favourite band these days, using two trumpets, are The Bookhouse Boys.

As you note about guitars, guitars, guitars probably the "lack of sax" now was due to the Beatles.... .... Though I think it's there but in isolated places in rock now. Some artists have used it real good...Rafferty, Springsteen, Steely Dan to name some. One pundit says no sax comes from the fact that music is now put together electronically and deosn't leave much to individual creativity on various instruments. Not sure about that but it's true the sax isn't used as much as it was back in the earlier eras. |
