Bruce Palmer..

...highly underrated and the backbone of Buffalo Springfiled. His fluid and creative
bass lines are amazing and he was admired by many contemporaries including Chris Hillman
and Ken Forssi. His bass lines on"Pay The Price" are so fast and fluid it sounds
impossible! Palmer relates that he was on acid that day and when he heard it later,
he couldn't believe it either..

I'll give you Richard Hell, one of the greats but, even though I'm very fond of The Adverts and The Ramones, I'm not totally sure either people you mentioned could be said to play particularly well. Mind you, maybe there's more to it than ability

well it said favourite Bass players! not Best! I am sure Phil Collins is a better Drummer than Tommy Ramone but I know which one I prefer to listen to

Very true Steve.

Actually, on the subject of favourite musicians and Phil Collins (!!!) I read an article the other day online that said Phil, in the 80's, very much appeared to copy the style of one of my favourite drummers, Dave Barbe (orignal Adam and the Ants drummer, before they were famous, and drummer for Bow Wow Wow). I know Dave and I'm sure his mind is boggling as much as mine over that comparison!!

Norman Watt Roy , Bass Player of The Blockheads

Dirk Wears White Sox is a great album, I remember buying Young Parisans on 7 inch single in 1979 I think, 30 years ago!

Paris Journals at http://timparistalk.proboards99.com

Agree with you on 'Dirk', it is a great album and, as we are on bass players, must mention Andy Warren, original bassist with The Ants, then with one of my other favourite bands, The Monochrome Set. 'Young Parisians' was actually released in October 1978, so even longer ago than you thought.

I agree with you about Norman Watt Roy, he is brilliant. He is currently playing with Wilko Johnson and will be at the Thunderbolt, Bristol for a gig quite soon.

The Blockheads are playing Bristol on December 21st at a venue next to Temple Meads Station, we hope to be there

Should be a good one, sadly can't get there as it's a Friday, my husband is working that night and I've no way to get home

December 21st is a monday

I think it was Steve 64 who gets the credit for including Lemmy

To be honest, I'd rather have all my fingernails pulled out than spend even five minutes listening to Motorhead but I agree he's damn good at what he does. Sadly, like the late Ron Asheton (Stooges guitarist) I am rather put off him by his fondness for collecting Nazi memorabillia...maybe this is something to do with me having a jewish mother?

Very interesting story Lemonade Kid,I know of course of his Buffalo Springfield stand in but thats it,have to listen to "hot dusty roads" for sure!!Such a sad story about Kenny in Michael Stuarts book though, robbing him for all his stuff when they had this happy mate reunion stuff going, and Kenny appeared at first to be clean..

Forssi was recruited by Buffalo Springfield for a stand at the Whiskey after Bruce Palmer was deported. Buff got to know him opening for Love.....

Michael Stuart told me that he loved that Whiskey-Springfield lineup best and loved to listen to them play during what is considered Springfield's peak.

BTW, Michael's favorite Buff tune? "Hot Dusty Roads"!! One of mine too. I guess that tune was awesome LIVE!! Would I have loved to see Kenny in Buff? Oh yeah!!

Kenny said it cracked him up when people kept asking the question...had he quit Love to join the Buffalo Springfield!!? Ha!

Excellent choices, but I too must include Lemmy - best rhythm bassist ever and Chris Squire - I mean, is 'The Fish' not the greatest bass solo ever?!! Finally, must include Phil Lesh - proof you don't need to play fingerstyle to be a phenomnal bass player.

Good point Steve. Ken Forssi told in an interview that he considered Frank Fayad a more tecnically accomplished bass player than himself and even praised him as a person,so nice he even learned Kenny some bass tricks! But who do i prefer of Kenny and Fayads bass playing?guess you know the answer..
