SPIRIT KEYBOARD PLAYER JOHN LOCKE DIES
Got his from the Madcaps Laughing Yahoo!-group:

We've just received the sad news that our good friend John Locke of
legendary Los Angeles combo Spirit passed away in Southern California
on Friday, August 4. Locke was the man whose dramatic keyboard
flourishes gave Spirit just enough of a jazz edge to mix with the
other strains that ran freely through the band's repertoire: quirky
folk and searing rock 'n' roll. Just as much as the extraordinary
guitar work of the late Randy California, and the amazing vocals of
Jay Ferguson, it was Locke's unique piano stylings that give Spirit
its indelible sound, one that came to epitomize the best music had to
offer in 1967-68.

Sad news indeed, I've loved Spirit for years and John definitely added something original to the group and to rock music. With Randy California gone it's just down to the great memories now.....Rest In Peace.

If constancy of affection over the years is used as a yardstick, then Spirit are my all time favorite band. To this day, I think that I've been lucky enough to have seen them more than any other. Sad,sad news.

Yet again,I'm stunned.Particularly,(as I noted in another post elsewhere) since the other band whose music I have been playing alongside Love these last few days is....Spirit...another of the great LA bands.Grant McClennan/Syd/Arthur & now John Locke...the Ol' Reaper must be putting on a Battle of the Bands or something....?

Along with carnage in the Middle East, and security alerts at home, these are strange, and sad days...RIP John.....thankyou for the music...Spirit lives.

Check www.VenturaCountyStar.com/obits for details on John Locke's
passing. I'm certain that his family would very much appreciate
messages of condolence in the on-line message book that accompanies
the obituary. He was a great musician and a very cool guy.

Gosh, it's been a bad week, huh?

Another talent comes to an end. What a fabulous band Spirit were.

Cheers for informing us.
