I HATE TO BE THE BEARER OF BAD NEWS BUT LOVE'S LONG AWAITED RETURN TO SAN FRANCISCO WAS A BIT OF A DISAPPOINTMENT.THE BAND WAS IN TOP FORM WHEN THEY WERE ALLOWED TO PLAY BUT ARTHUR HAD HIS MIND PRETTY MUCH FOCUSED ON SOME ASSHOLE IN THE AUDIENCE...I ARRIVED AT THE VENUE DURING THE SOUND CHECK AND MAN,THEY SOUNDED GREAT!!I REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA BE A KILLER SHOW BUT IT WAS NOT.HE OPENED WITH A RATHER LISTLESS "SIGNED DC"DURING WHICH HE PLAYED A LOT OF HARP AND
MENTIONED THE DEATH OF DON CONKA,FOR WHOM THE SONG WAS WRITTEN.THAT SEEMED TO DARKEN HIS MOOD.THE SONG WENT ON FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES DURING WHICH THE BAND EXCHANGED A LOT OF NERVOUS GLANCES.I FELT SORRY FOR THEM.IT WASN'T A COMPLETE FEAKOUT LIKE THE 1ST SPACELAND SHOW FROM LAST YEAR BUT IT VERY EASILY COULD HAVE WENT THAT WAY.HE COULDN'T SING WELL AT ALL UNTIL TOWARDS THE END OF THE EVENING AND HAD TO SIT DOWN DURING NEARLY THE WHOLE SET.THAT KNIGHT-IN-SHINING-ARMOR RUSTY SQUEEZEBOX COVERED ARTHUR'S ASS ALOT TONIGHT,SOMETIMES HAVING TO SING ENTIRE VERSES ALONE.I THINK ONLY THE PRESENCE OF JOHNNY ECHOLS KEPT ARTHUR FROM GOING DOWN THE DARK ROAD COMPLETELY.THEY DID DO FOREVER CHANGES,NOT IN ORDER.FRANKLY I LEFT BEFORE THE SHOW ENDED BECAUSE IT JUST MAKES ME UNCOMFORTABLE TO SEE HIM LIKE THAT AND TO SEE THE BAND'S DISAPPOINTMENT..DOES HE PULL THIS CRAP WHEN HE'S IN THE UK.?HE WENT ON ABOUT MICHAEL JACKSON AS WELL...I STILL LOVE THIS BAND AND HOPE ARTHUR WILL BE FEELING BETTER TOMORROW NIGHT.THANKS AGAIN TO MIKE,DADDY-0,RUSTY,JOHNNY AND DAVE FOR GREAT MUSICIANSHIP DURING A ROUGH NIGHT.

without rehashing through all the mud again,it seems the poor guy had his all time worse onstage
meltdowns resulting in cancellations of a show or two....

Hi people,

I've been hospitalised for a while, guess that's the reason I don't know what Larry's talking about. What went wrong in Spain?

I don't know the answer to your question

BUT I have to say, he might 'enjoy the chaos' but it's no fun for those in the band with him or the people who have paid good money to see a show.

Arthur enjoying the whole thing wouldn't surprise me at all. Sorry to say, but I just can't imagine him going to a AA meeting. Or maybe I could see him going just one time, just to put up an Arthurly show.

Have to agree with you Moxie, it's never too late to change and AA/NA can certainly help here-if you want to change. And Larry, yes, there always has to be an excuse-then you can avoid looking at what the real problem is! Can't help feeling very sorry for AL and his predicament, and, like all on this board, hope he finds a way through it.

If Arthur is really an alcoholic, only real motivation to stop drinking will do the job. The more people moan about it, the more "f*** off" will be the reaction. He must firts of all stop drinking for HIMSELF, not to please somebody else, that will automaticly follow once the big step is taken...

I'm very sorry to read about this gig. Just when one thinks that everything is cool, the band is playing well, and there seems to be a decent number of 'live dates', the bottom falls out. I hope to see Arthur get it together yet again.

Whatever the reason that Arthur seems to fall into a state of decline, I hope he gathers the strength to get past all of it. Maybe if he only realized the 'legend' that he really is...

I would like to echo much of what has been said above...when Arthur's good few can touch him but it is a gamble. If word gets out about exactly what a gamble a 'Love' gig will be then people will stop coming...yep, the diehards will always turn up but your average gig goer just isn['t going to risk their money, it's as simple as that.

It's sad to hear Arthur's falling into his bad habbits again. I'm really dissapointed by it.
About 3 years ago I had an after-show talk with Arthur in Utrecht, Holland. He sounded like the concert was: really great! He even talked about the past and missed chances due to his wild years. He was glad to be a clean and, most of all, free man.
But there was some nostalgia in his words when he told me about " his whisky nights" with Keith Richard. I remember thinking " I hope he realizes that the past is gone, and that he knows he's not 25 anymore". Anyway, before me stood a man in his 50s, looking good and sober.
The next time I saw the band was at the Royal Festival Hall in London, January 15th 2003. Again they sounded great. There were only 2 minor points: Arthur was giving more attention to the camera's recording the show for the forthcoming DVD than to the audience, and of course there was that terrible new song he performed. I hate it so much that I even forgot the titlle. But those things are nothing compared with the latest news.
Arthur, if you read this: get back on your feet again and fight, don't forget who you are and don't let the people in the cold that did enormous efforts to help you back on track. First of all I'm thinking here about the great band that's backing you with so much love and respect for you and your songs.

I have seen Arthur at his best and at his worst. You folks in the UK are fortunate to usually see him at his best.
MIke and Rusty are true "class acts" and Johnny is an incredible man in his own right. But Mike and Rusty have brought LOVE back to where they are today. They have stayed faithful and true to the music. In spite of Arthur's f@@@@ups.
I almost flew up to SF to see them and now I'm glad I didn't.
Arhtur's voice and stage persona can be so mesmerizing. It is a shame to hear that he has screwed up once again.
Mike is one of the most talented guitar players I have ever heard. And on top of that he is a nice guy. A genuinely nice guy. And so is Rusty.
Mike can take me places in my mind with his incredible talent that puts him up there with the best of the best. And Rusty always comes through with the vocals and his incredible talent also.
When will Arthur learn that he is not an island?
I was saddened to read this but not surprised. Hope you guys in the UK can have the real Arthur Lee back and well when he arrives.
We don't need to lose another legend.

It's just after 7 here on the Left Coast. They should be on stage again in about three hours. I hope it's a good one. Me? I'm not taking a chance. I'll be praying for our boy to overcome his demons. Best to all.

I THINK THAT THE MIKE TYSON COMPARISON REALLY HITS IT ON THE HEAD!!SAD BUT TRUE....

Moxie. for a new poster here you've hit the nail on the head extraordinarily accurately.

A vague feeling of deja vu here - to paraphrase Marlon, he could have been a contender....

However as I have commented before, Mr Lee would appear to be a man with a remarkable survival instinct - so roll on Stourbridge!!

ALL future LOVE show promoters need to insert a "sobriety" clause into their contract riders. If he's loaded, cancel the show and let him pay for it all out of his own "soon-to-be-empty-again, if-he-doesn't-change-his-ways", pocket.
And RED TELEPHONE Management needs to get this guy a "handler". Everything about this band and organization is top notch except for the ONE it's all built around. I wonder if he ever reads this stuff.

HEY ARTHUR! I love you and your music. PLEASE GET SOME HELP.

I always wondered how Jimi's life would have gone if he hadn't died so young. It was always my opinion he would wind up like our "Lost Love", Arthurly has. A joke and a poor one at that. I hate saying that. I'm one of the faithful who waited years to see this man in concert. It's not to late to change course. AA/NA anyone?
