I always understood that Brian was a socialist - he supported the miner's strike and gave free tickets to strikers etc. He was certainly considered a God by the people of Nottingham.

He did like a drink though!! Brian Clough RIP.

My favourite Clough story is when he commanded all his players in Nottingham Forest to get drunk the evening before the FA cup final because they were so tense and nervous.drunk indeed they got,and they won the day after too!

now that was one man with dodgy views. but he's been forgiven many many times because despite all his faults he was a football genius and you couldn't but help but warm to him in that crazy right wing older relative type way.

here's some of his classic quotes:

On the importance of passing to feet: "If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there.''

On the influx of foreign players in the British game: "I can't even spell spaghetti never mind talk Italian. How could I tell an Italian to get the ball? He might grab mine.''

On how he rated himself: "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one.''

On the streaker who appeared during a Derby game against Manchester United: "The Derby players have seen more of his balls than the one they're meant to be playing with.''

On dealing with Roy Keane: "I only ever hit Roy the once. He got up so I couldn't have hit him very hard.''

On his drinking: "Walk on water? I know most people out there will be saying that instead of walking on it, I should have taken more of it with my drinks. They are absolutely right.''

On dealing with a player who disagrees: "We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right.''

Referring to Sir Alex Ferguson's failure to win two successive European Cups: "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!''

On women's football: "I like my women to be feminine, not sliding into tackles and covered in mud.''

We have now lost Brian Clough, a man of impeccable political antecedents.
gordo Posted - 20/09/2004 : 13:10:24
well said New Guy.

now to depress anybody who holds strong political beliefs either left, right or centre

research has shown that elections are won depending on which way the 4% of voters who don't have any interest in politics vote.

In other words you can argue as much as you like with each other, but it ain't going to make any difference to way any of you think, it's the people that don't care who make all the big decisions.

We're all doomed! So as we all drown in a sea of apathy, wear a smile and give everybody a wave

First of all I'm sad that Johnny Ramone has passed away. I think we all notice it much more when it is the truly original people who die. Heck, it was a year since Johnny Cash passed away last week and I noticed it mentioned all over the internet.
All I can say on the rest of this thread is that, by all accounts, politics here was much more polarised in the 1970s and for a lot of people punk was very anti establishment. For Johnny Ramone to come out with the statement he did was shocking, especially now George Bush has destroyed any respect anyone overseas had for the White House. That's not anti-americanism. Anti Bush maybe. It's merely the facts getting in the way. I can see that in the current climate, for someone, who showed their colours when music was for many fans a political thing, to come out with something that betrays all their fans' memories does seem rather cruel to the fans. It makes what went before seem rather hollow. And if it's George Bush they turn to, well, it's doubly hollow, y'know? Also, musicians often use their music to convey their politics. For Politicians everywhere you might need to look at their tax returns to know what and who drives them.

To spell it out, I think Caryne was actually saying "( I really was a punk for a reason and )It's sad but I did kind of lose all faith in him when he did that 'God Bless George Bush' thing when inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame....sorry but it just wasn't right for him to be a Republican (given what his music stood for)"

If anyone can explain to me where tolerance comes into the politics of George Bush, the republican's figurehead, without just telling me that I'm anti-American, intolerant or offensive, I'm all ears......

Well said Gill, I'll second that. Maybe if some of you guys drop it (for it's you in my eyes at least that are prolonging this argument at the same time as saying this isn't the place for such topics!)she will too and we can move on.

Hands off Caryne!
Gill Posted - 17/09/2004 : 20:05:46
Without wanting to turn this into a war, I really think you guys give Caryne a bit of hard time. OK I'm friends with her and I think she would agree that we are very different people in that I tend not to post anything controversial (years of training) but I do think that you should allow her to speak her opinions without being quite so personal in your criticisms of her.

I only know Caryne through being a Love fan but from what I know of her she is very caring and maybe that's one of her faults - she is passionate about certain issues and isn't afraid to express her views, surely that's what freedom of speech is all about. Yes I know, if put your opinions out there you've got to expect that some people disagree with you, but some of the comments I've seen recently have been very personal and unnecessary.

Speech over!

Love
Gill

Caryne,
Somehow I didn't think you could just drop it. Can you refrain
from these pissing contests, dogfights etc. They are at first slightly amusing but grow to annoying, arrogant and ultimately
nauseating. Can we go back to our regular programming now ?

Caryne:
You just keep getting "beat up" on this board. And Mark is right. How you tie Hitler, Stalin, or other pure whack jobs to a singer in the Ramones is beyond me. Music is the love of this board and somehow, you manage to go off on tangents. Your mind is a fascinating "thing"
andyl Posted - 17/09/2004 : 17:30:55
lmao, i dont think its because your a socialist

Indeed, RIP Johnny. We loved your music and are forever grateful for the punk revolution it help ignite. I saw the band just once, on New Year's Eve, in New York City and memory of the show's thunderous power will always stay with me.

Caryne, your comments do not deserve serious scrutiny. You truly speak out of your ass in so many ways that I can not afford to take the time to address them one by one nor will I dignify your comments by doing so.

And incidentally, do you think it's a coincidence that on this largely peaceful board that you are a lightning rod for criticism?

BRG - only by a (un) select few and to be honest, as a socialist all my life I am used to criticism from the centre and right...water off a duck's back, so to speak.

It seems, everytime there is a controversial thread one person is at the heart of it. Caryne the only thing you seem to be fighting for is yourself. Your Anti-American viewpoints and comments are extremely offensive. Drop it and let's stick to the music.

Hmm, since when does being anti-Bush and anti-Republican make you 'anti-american'?Funny thing is I've heard both Arthur and Mike make some pretty damning anti-Bush statements in the past...does that make them anti-american too? Luckily, I know lots of great, liberal, americans who hate american imperialism(in fact all imperialism) as much as I do...so I won't let a few spoil my idea that america is a country that has lots of fine people living in it!
