Never mind the lip synched American Bandstand Love clips
that have been around for years, what ever happened to
that report about 5 years ago that some guy cleaning out an
office or rental space found HOURS AND HOURS of TV broadcast
video tapes from some small regional LA TV Show from the mid 1960's
which contained REAL LIVE clips of LOVE performing in or around
1967 ?

The press blurb from the time (around 2000 ?) said the owners were
in the process of clearing the releases and putting the lot out on a DVD collection.

Anyone know any more about this series ?

Gonna have to hit (ow!) Rocket Scientist on St Marks until they have it in

Virgin, Barnes and Noble, etc
None of these have it, curiously. Or the infamous Bleecker Bobs!

Hey, Joe.......Mine's on the way from my dealer in Maine, but also alas, no posters or postcards.

They probably didn't want you to use more than 60 seconds for
fear of it being widely bootleged.

Absolutely. Sorry to be a Johnny-come-lately on this post, but it certainly was an April Fool's joke, albeit not a funny one.

There are a couple of clues: 'Chuck Blair', a reference to Tony Blair who was starting to lose popularity in the UK. And 'KPER', the alleged station - a pun on caper.

A fellow Love devote friend of mine wrote to Record Collector at the time to tell them that it was in poor taste. The silence was deafening!

Record Collector certainly weren't above the odd April Fool's prank from time to time. When they printed the tracklisting for Gethsemane after supposedly speaking with a studio engineer from the time - that too was in an April edition. Humour I suppose, is a highly subjective thing. And I would think that, to an outsider, there is something amusing about how readily the ardent completist will suspend their sense of credulity as they continue their insatiable quest.

I know what you mean. We really wanted to show those clips in their entirety, but simply we were not allowed to. Dick Clarke Productions (Rights owners of the footage) dont let you use more than 60 seconds of footage before you have to cut away to something else (I think it was 60 seconds if I remember rightly) anyway ,whatever it was we were allowed is how long the clips are in the film. Ive no idea why. Again frustrating.

That was quite an effort though! Thanks Mike for turning
over ever stone in your search. All Love fans appreciate
that kind of devotion. A lot of people making Love Story
would have just scratched the surface.

BTW, why weren't the entire American Bandstand and Where
The Action Is performances part of the LS DVD extras? I know it costs
a lot more to use the entire performance.

In terms of Love live - it became like the Holy Grail for us when making the film, we heard so many stories like the one above, all these possible live recordings of the band and we chased all of them up. The closest we really got was when we spoke to Bill Sagan at Wolfgangs Vault, as we were aware of them having recordings (both audio and footage) of most the Fillmore gigs and Johnny mentioned that he vaguely recollects being filmed when they played there one time.

Anyway, they do have a vast vault of recordings and they've pretty much gone through and sorted the audio only stuff, but back in 2006 when we spoke they had only just started on the film footage. We asked if they had any Love footage in amongst it all and according to their inventory they do - but he stated that sometimes what's listed on the inventory and also on the film cannister is not always whats on the actual 16mm tapes inside. We then asked when he thought they'd get around to digitising the Love footage and he said probably not for a year or so (so around 2008). First we offered to digitise the film for them but he refused saying that in a lot of cases the film is so rare and fragile that they only allow certain people to do the process as they will only play the film once and they digitise it there and then, the film is then no longer played just in case. We then offered to pay them to digitise the film by their specialist people - in order to bring the Love footage to the front of the queue - again he refused. We had to re-edit the film in May of this year, just prior to its DVD release so again we got in touch, again asking if they'd made any progress with it, but he said that they hadnt. We explained that we didnt want the whole film and that if we could just use only a small segment it might actually help them to promote whatever it was that they intend to do with the film once they get round to it. In the end Bill Sagan simply stopped replying to our emails. Its really frustrating knowing there may be this recording of Love live sat in this warehouse just waiting to be seen. Like I said, we also heard several other stories about live footage of the band when we were making the film, but mostly they came to nothing.

Anyway, what would Conka have been doing drumming with them in '67? Michael Stuart was in then. Never heard anything about Conka being around at that time.

Oh please say this will happen!! Just those 6 bands alone would make it worthwhile having, let alone what other lesser known acts might have been on.

Those making the documentary are chasing these clips, but they might just be a hoax.

Here's the story:
From Record Collector (April 2001 no. 260 page 12).

SWEET AS KANDY - Amazing lost footage found
A remarkable cache of priceless videos featuring a long-lost US 60's TV show has been uncovered in a vault in Southern California. The find contains 18 complete episodes of the cult West Coast pop show, The Kandy Klub, and features never-repeated footage of luminaries such as Love, the Electric Prunes, the Standells, the Seeds, the Chocolate Watch Band, and Left Banke, to name six.
The Kandy Klub tapes were found by US computer programmer Chuck Blair while clearing out offices within the defunct station, KPER, at Hilcrest, California. Blair's business associate, veteran local broadcaster Larry 'Salsa' Dean, spooled through the tapes and identified the find as the majority of the show's 26-week run, broadcast between January and June 1967.
Dean recalls that the programme was "staffed by student volunteers" and that it was the only time Love ventured that far out of LA. They serve up storming versions of "7 and 7 Is" and "My Flash On You", and in a post-performance interview, hostess Cherry Suite asks about their favorite colour, prompting Arthur Lee's enigmatic response: "A my love, B my love, so hard to choose"! When The In-Komplete Kandy Klub gets its planned video/DVD release, viewers might ponder why the band were only filmed from the waist up. Dean explains that, "Lee and drummer Don Conka were both rolling joints and the floor manager was having kittens"! With no logging details on the original boxes and no existing station files, it's hard to establish just what else was screened on The Kandy Klub. What we do have to lokk forward to is a 6-video/4-DVD set, which will come complete with a hefty booklet written by Dean, and period packaging including a Cherry Suite poster and key-fob bearing the show's K-shaped candy bar logo.

Actually, come to think of it, these "found" live clips of the original line up would make a GREAT center piece for the Love Documentary that's now in the works.

Free the docs !
