Posted - 09/04/2005 : 18:47:55 sorry if this question gets asked a lot but i'd be quite interested to know which 'love' songs people would consider to be their all time favs?
i'd have to say my absolute favourite would be 'you set the scene'
closely followed by 'old man', 'your mind and we belong together' and 'the red telephone'
guess it depends on what mood you're in at the time and also different versions of a song can affect choices i.e some tracks just sound so different live

Posted - 07/07/2005 : 06:34:33 Message to Pretty is strong in my mind tonight. You Set the Scene meant so much to me when I was young Between Clark and Hilldale gets sung alot on the freeways Alone Again Or is so beautiful, and a couple of lines in it always lift my heart Bummer in the Summer (the joy of bellowing 'It's just a FALSE-HOOD!")

Posted - 05/07/2005 : 02:30:11 Alone Again Or She Comes In Colors The Castle A House Is Not A Motel God knows ...they're all brilliant, but the biscuit for me is taken by Laughing Stock..pretty much the last thing the original group recorded together.Where did that wierd chanted intro come from? And the second part of the song(the uptempo section) is musically and lyrically an accurate account of how the band literally fell-apart six months or so after it was recorded! How strange is that? First heard it on the late great John Peel's "Top Gear"Radio One show September 1968?It took me 8 years to find out what it was called because I didn't catch the title when Peelie played it and initially it was only available on 7"single which was quickly deleted. Finally discovered it on John Tobler's "Love Masters" compilation in 1976 at a Birmingham record shop called "The Diskery"(a favourite haunt of one Robert Plant, who lived in the next valley to me when I lived in Wales and who is as everybody knows a great Arthur Lee and Love fan! |

Posted - 29/06/2005 : 08:49:38 This week it would be: Stephanie Knows Who- the Lovely delirium, Arthur's feverish shout out to some mysterious girl whose mind and he belong together..
The Castle- Still gets me every time..Images of them holed up at Bela Lugosi's noirish Castle....the start-stop of the bass, the way Arthur says Me-xi-co...the harpsicord break...the cascading ending.....remains enigmatic to this very day.
Maybe the People Would Be the Times- "What is happening and how have you been"....A cinematic painting in lycergic technicolor..the horns adding other-worldly structure to this timeless slice of wistful and blissful psych....

Posted - 12/04/2005 : 23:31:41 I have to second John E and put 'Live and Let Live' up there with the best. When I heard it live on the Love comeback in 2003 I was deeply moved. It seemed autobiographical, describing Arthur's recent incarceration, especially with the gestures that Arthur used to emphasise the message. I saw the song in a different light after that. Subsequently, when I read that it was inspired by one of my all time favourite Buffalo Springield songs 'Broken Arrow', it cemented my connection with the song.
After the recent Newport show I have been obsessed by 'Can't Explain' and 'Seven and Seven Is'. Arthur's interpretation of a lounge scene with his dad and dog is so surreal on the latter. But it all depends on what you heard/saw last. Just my two-pennyworth! |

Posted - 11/04/2005 : 22:00:37 Hey Kula, I have both and ifyoubelievein is much better than Candy's Waltz. "CW" isn't horrible or anything, but a couple on tunes I could really do without. "Husband and Father" is worse than a fork on a blackboard.

Posted - 11/04/2005 : 16:02:10 Kula John...To me, 'Ifyoubelievein' shows the very sensitive and sincere side of Bryan. It is not a Rock album and so you will be disappointed if you're expecting that. LOVE was a group of 5 individuals, that managed to play together as a band. The incredible bass lines of Ken really broke ground for its time, the tremendous drumming of Michael, the superior guitar playing of Johnny, and the beautiful writings of Bryan [Softly to Me, Old Man, etc.]. I believe there was always some friction between Arthur and Bryan-read Pegasus Carousel by Michael Stuart-Ware...it's a very interesting account of the band through his eyes.
My favorites-
You I'll Be Following Stephanie Knows Who Between Clark and Hilldale Your Mind And We Belong Together

Posted - 10/04/2005 : 23:02:15 ok thanks for that John E, yeh i've heard some clips of some of the songs on it but i am just quite intrigued to hear the rest of it...plus the different versions of old man, orange skies and alone again or. I managed to get it 2nd hand off amazon so it has only cost me £5-6 so i reckon it'll be worth the money!!
