Ed asked what these lines meant from Between Clark and Hilldale....
Moon's a common scene around my town Yeah where everyone is painted brown And if we do get stuck away Let's go paint everybody gray
Johnny's answer..... When Arthur and I were kids, we would often lie in the grass, and look up at the moon. Which was common, all the other kids did the same thing. Most of the people where we grew up were, "brown skinned". so they were painted brown.
When we became of age, and realizing our options were very limited (if you view that's not the way), we moved to an area with more opportunities, and most of the people there were "white". Gray was a slang term for white. Hence paint every body gray I hope it doesn't ruin the song for you.

Arthur was...the street-life philosopher....sitting on a hillside, watching all the people die....it is all so repetitious, waiting on the sun....
I'll take street smart, down on Go-Stop Boulevard.....that was Arthur, (and my other favorite, Gene Clark)...never read, just lived.
(I am not knocking books, read em all the time myself.....they just don't hold a candle to actually being in it--life that is)

lee...well you know sometimes good stuff doesn't come easy in each life. We live, we learn, we bleed, we love, we die. All in all Arthur and his bands gave us some insight into life and how we all live it. To me he's the philosopher! |

Posted - 11/12/2010 : 23:24:47 interpretations. Arthur's lyrics present such a clear insight into the scenes he is unfolding, that many of his songs have become like memories to me. He says it right down to sidewalk level, and paints the sunset in the sky. No matter about how he learned his way through life, he put his soul down in musical endevor, he suceeded; he was a poet among poets, trying to make a living on his poems; a sad thing when you think about; a romantic approach to life. He was a sucessful man.
It's all the same day. |

And that leads me to say that Arthur always made you think you're "saving a seat" for someone or something around these parts...As Bruce Hornsby said, "that's the way it is"... |
