There is in fact a "lost" Love album!

About six months before we signed with Elektra we recorded most of the songs
that were on the first album plus John Lee Hooker which later became "Revelation"!

These sessions were recorded at Gold Star studios, and were produced by writer
Jerry Hopkins.

The Quality of these recordings were amazing, the sound and production values were world
class, far better than that which was achieved with Bruce Botnick at Sunset Sound.

Gold Star was a fantastic studio, with great engineers who actually listened to the
musicians, and Knew how to get the best sound and performances from them!

The other reason things went so well was the drummer, we had the great Hal Blaine
keeping time, just having someone like him in the room improved the level of everyone's
playing.

Jerry took the tapes to several Record Companies, most were interested but would not
budge when it came to the biggest obstacle, publishing rights to our songs. (Elektra was
the only company that would allow us to maintain total control of our songs.)

This was almost unheard of at the time, even groups like the Beatles and the Stones
didn't own the "Publishing" rights to the songs they wrote.

After running headlong into this seeming road block time and time again... Jerry decided
to throw in the towel, and as the years became decade's...forgot about, misplaced, or
just plain lost track of those tapes!

Several Record companies including Elektra, Rhino, MCA, and a few others have offered
substantial sums of money for the "Lost" or missing tapes, but as of now, where they are
remains another one of the intriguing "mysteries" of the group called Love.

PS:I forgot to mention...Don Conka also played on several songs, when he could
make it to the session!

sounds different as I recall

haven't listened to Black Beauty in ages though - anyone?

The harmonies on "You I'll be following" (B side) are not so hot. Sorta give me a headache. Prefer the Love version

I think you can hear that particular version on the WFMU archive

I'm confused! Is the version of Stay Away on Black Beauty different from the one available
on the Norton Records marble forty five's? (Iv'e never heard Black Beauty.)

There were cases available at at the benefit for Arthur, and there seemed to be a bunch of them still for sale when it was over!

...By the way the single of Stay Away is still available on Norton Records for under
twenty dollars...I wish the people selling them on ebay good luck!

Black Beauty. But I do prefer the original version from The American Four

shame about the harmonies on the flip!

whats Stay Away from again? Vindicator? Black Beauty?

Good good single - hope more marble vinyl turns up one day!

If one listens to Stay Away...it seems clear that the seeds of what would become "Love" have already been sown! Arthurs unique vocal quality, literally jumps out of the speakers.
The harmonies are there, Johnny Echols fluid guitar style is apparent even at the tender age of seventeen. Those guy's were ready for "prime time" from jump street!

A friend of mine met with Skip Woods about two years ago in regard to Black Beauty, but somehow Reel to Real kept coming up from Woods. He said he would be very interested in remastering it, and doing some expanded liner notes. He mentioned there were bonus tracks aplenty. Like maybe three or so.
Joe Morris Posted - 29/10/2009 : 22:47:23
there are outtakes from Real to Reel as well, I was reading in an old Castle

Of course Real to Reel being reissued with bonus tracks is not on anyones urgency meter

People are more interested in the original Love, I figure

Of course, this explains me playing endlessly the Stay Away b/w You I'll Be Following single!

Well here is hope that it comes out. Maybe the good folks at Rhino will find it somewhere much like the master of Forever Changes, that was used to make the two-disc edition.

Sounds cool.
