Posted - 21/10/2009 : 10:17:08 Friends; friends and I mean that in every sense of the word, please reconsider your decision to end your participation on this board!
I have over the years, thought of the members of this board as friends, even when I didn't post very often I would still find myself drawn to this space just to find out what the consensus of the board was.
Let us not destroy, because of a misunderstanding or hurt feelings, a community of ideas that took year's to build.
If I caused any of you to feel "toxic" by my responses then you have my sincere, and heartfelt apology.
Your participation and your insight, is what make's this "Marketplace" of idea's, by far the best such "Sounding board". on the entire web!
As a friend, I again ask you to reconsider!

Posted - 21/10/2009 : 11:25:18 No problems with what you are saying John. I agree that debate and discussion is very important, however people need to remember that when others disagree with them it is not a personal attack, merely a matter of opinion. The other thing we need to remember is that people post on forums, all forums not just this one, for all manner of reasons and moderators are needed not to be 'thought police' but to ensure that everything is running smoothly and those with motives for posting which can cause hurt and cause offence are kept in check. |

Posted - 21/10/2009 : 10:42:09 I'll definitely second that....my thoughts exactly! No one should ever be made to feel that they've been forced off the board. And I know that Lemonadekid and several others have been especially good at welcoming new members. I endorse fully what Tina has said about freedom of expression.....as well as Johnny's concerns about the dangers of a 'thought police' mentality. Furthermore, I believe that this stance is entirely consistent with that of following online etiquette.....I've quoted before Obama's saying to the effect that it is possible to disagree without becoming disagreeable. It is when heat and anger start to creep into postings that things begin to go awry. My own feeling is that if someone makes a prat of themselves by posting something scurrilous or inflammatory then it is better simply to let it hang there...rather than to try to fight fire with fire. The posting will soon be be overtaken by more informed and sensible discourse. |
