Posted - 12/02/2009 : 18:21:10 Just a heads-up for the literary-minded fans; the current issue of Oxford American (the Southern Magazine of Good Writing), and yes, it is a literary magazine, published quarterly, is their tenth annual music issue. Each year the music issue contains what is, for my money, some of the best music writing anywhere, and a very cool CD that illustrates and accompanies the stories in the magazine. This issue, #63, has two pieces on Arthur and Love; "Love with Arthur Lee, The Original Psychedelic Pioneer," by Hayden Childs, and "Love with Arthur Lee, His Last Band" by Alison Fenstertock. The CD includes the RSO "Reel To Real" version of "Everybody's Gotta Live." Well worth tracking down, and not just for the pieces on Arthur, you'll find the magazine at most Borders or Barnes and Noble locations, but because it's a literary, and not a music publication, you might have to ask for help in locating it. Also, it's only on the stands for a limited time, so sooner rather than later would be the smart way to play it. Excellent reading; highly recommended. |

Posted - 05/03/2009 : 08:37:01 What was the story with BL? Did they get tired of Arthur ripping them off on the money for Rainbow in the Storm
or was Arthur so ill that he just couldn't catch a plane over to the UK with them
Oh well. At least Echols was with them on that last UK tour, but it must've been an embarassment for Arthur to have opted out at the last minute (ouch!)
It seems that Love lasted longer than most (well over a decade, including Arthurs incarcaration. Its doubtful that he played within..) |

Only if "barely" means, some Memphis musicians who didn't even know Arthur got together and rehearsed some Love tunes without him being there, and then got dressed up for a photo shoot and he arrived took some pictures shook their hands, did a short interview and then left without ever actually singing with them or even hearing them play.
KD: Yep, and then we got to hear how they were going to be the "real" new Love after Arthur got rid of those unsympathetic and un-supportive malcontents Baby Lemonade.
Yea, right.
Free the bands !

Posted - 25/02/2009 : 19:08:25 Right there with you on that, Jazmaan. Not to take anything away from the Memphis players, but it certainly would appear that Baby Lemonade was the last Love band to actually manage to make music (as opposed to only making plans) with Arthur. Were there even rehearsal tapes of the Memphis line-up? |

Posted - 25/02/2009 : 04:48:17 As far as I know, Arthur's "last band" was Baby Lemonade. I've yet to hear any convincing evidence that Arthur ever sang with that Memphis band. He did tell me that he planned to appear with them, but a pre-gig photo shoot does not make them "Love". |

Really good Residents track on the 2cd sampler as well, tho I'd personally recommend the new Buddy Holly 2cd.. |

Wonder if Real to Reel will see release on cd - this appearance of Everybodys gotta live begs the question |

Posted - 20/02/2009 : 14:14:17 You kow the really good things about the articles is that they show Arthur's "breadth" in music. To do a record like FC and to be involved in that Memphis sound are two completely different musical sensibilities. I think Arthur navigated that very well. It takes a certain kind of artist for sure who can express his musical ideas in different areas. |

..interesting articles...not too much emphasis on FC though which leads me to think that perhaps that the writers wanted to expose his "rockier/memphis" side since perhaps that was where his strong and true interests lied. And if FC was a "bump" in the road it was a big bump.
Since it is a magazine of "Southern" music, you're right about the emphasis on the Memphis angle, I guess.

Posted - 18/02/2009 : 23:32:13 Issue 7 of the Castle covers Real to Reel. Odd the album is not out on cd and yet Love Live is
Or Live at Liverpool (nice live tape, luv)
I remember Rozelle giving this infamous Love lp to the judge when he was on Moral Court (!)
Reviews at the time compared it unfavorably with a lump of **** |

Posted - 18/02/2009 : 18:38:42 That particular photo of Arthur was on the original inner sleeve of "Reel To Real," at least on the first press. Not infrequently, back then, there would be a cooler (and also more costly to manufacture) inner sleeve initially, followed by a plain white paper sleeve later. The other side of the original inner sleeve, as I recall, had lyrics and track by track musician credits. |

Posted - 18/02/2009 : 03:27:58 Agreed. A great article and the best version of Everybody's Gotta Live out there. Also an interesting old photo of Arthur I had never seen. Looks like his post-Four Sail early-seventies bald period. Buddhist monk vibe to it. The 2cd comp is truly eclectic and inspired, and obviously put together by some serious, obsessive music junkies.
