Hi All

Just a quick message to say that for the next few months I may not be around much on this board. I'm off to Rwanda on Monday for a year (all being well) to teach English. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time but now it's finally come to leaving I'm pretty nervous...but excited too .

Anyways, I may have the internet from time to time so I'll try and stop by and say hi. If you want to keep track of what i'm up to i'll by keeping an online blog, here's the link...

http://dacapo1967.livejournal.com/ (hope you like the name!)

I'll certainly miss not logging in here on a daily basis like I do now but I'm taking an iPod full of Love and Baby Lemondae songs so that should keep me going

All the best to everyone on here for 2010. I'll be sending emails from time to time talking about my year in Rwanda so if anyone would like to receive these just drop me your email address and i'll add you to the mailing list.

LOVE

Kula John

Hi all

Firstly I just wanted to say thanks for reading my blog if you have done this year and apologies if I posted the link each each time and you're weren't actually interested!! Sorry it was so long but if it's any consolation this was the edited version!!

I have a little request for anyone who's able to help. After some encouragement I've been thinking about having a little go at getting this hotchpotch of stories published. I have no idea if any publishers will be interested but I thought I'd give it a go. Anyway, it would help me if maybe some people could just let me know what they thought of the blog, what I wrote, etc, etc. If you have a minute in this busy festive season either to post a quick reply to this message or alternatively by leaving a comment on my final blog entry (here's the link again http://dacapo1967.livejournal.com/6352.html, just scroll to the bottom and you can leave a comment right in the bottom left corner where it says 'leave a comment'!!) I'd be extremely grateful.

It would just be useful to get an idea of what people thought of it and if it was liked this may help if I send it to any publishers.

Thanks in advance and happy new year!

KJ

p.s I hope you don't mind me posting this request.

Have a safe journey home, Kula John. And thank you for keeping us so well informed. I spent my entire working life as a teacher - but I don't think that I would ever have had the courage to embark on that kind of mission....yet it is such vital work. And so, jolly well done.

heh heh man I think I'm at the point like that unruly priest Martin Luther back when. It's just a matter of time that i'm going to sit down, put pen to paper and write down my 95 theses about what I've learned about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (and education!!) around here and all after all these years and paste it somewhere on a column in Wash DC!! I mean sometimes you've got to open up the window and let some fresh air in!!!! You can bet that i'll be watching the politico winds now. Oh no will it be "won't get fooled again!???"....;-).....(and there's a reason that song keeps hanging around, eh???)...thank you Pete....

It is my impression, that with the state of the US economy, with all the talk of improving our education here (which is great political fodder), that the US places more value in money and big business and less on such things as education.
After all. there are no immediate profits from a good education....and something like better opportunities for the young is an end that is so far in the future that they fail to see the value. They start out pushing education, at an early age, when children should be developing social skills, and being children---and burning out by the 3rd grade, when the big bucks from "educational toys" dry up. Why else would the US be at the bottom in math and science skills...and many other fields. The brain drain....remember that old saying. SO the US "imports" all the talent from abroad...for our hospitals, etc (I don't know how many foreign medical interns I have encountered at the University hospital here, but it is staggering.). Hopefully things will change for the better soon, for the world. I guess I have a rather pessimistic view of the current state, but I believe my youth spent outdoors, was much better spent than at a computer for 8 hours a day.

If 2012 doesn't get us first!! We hope it doesn't render us all moot!
