Torben kindly opened this new Forum subject & header..... It'd be great to hear all the differing views & tastes on any topic you all would like......so fire away!
So.......
My "loves" run into the classic movie arena, along with my passion for music......so how about your favorite classic movies, films , documentaries.
Judging by my quote below, it's obvious I guess, #1 is Harvey for me. Most Laurel & Hardy films & Mr. Smith Goes To Washington! Duck Soup  ......for starters!

A great topic! My all time favourite director is Fred Zimmermann and my top four of his (in chronological order)are:
1. High Noon
2. A Man For All Seasons
3. The Day of the Jackal
4. Julia
He has his characters reveal their true selves by presenting them with moral choices. And Zimmermann said towards the end of his life that Will Cane (Gary Cooper) and Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) were really spiritual cousins - each chose when his time came, the more difficult path...but also the right one. |

me, too Laural and Hardy! one of their silent film shorts, "Two Tars", is extremely funny. it's the one where they get into an argument on the highway with another motorist. the whole movie is each party ripping off a piece of each others' car and destroying piece by piece! and they're all polite about it!
another funnny one is , "It's a Gift", with W.C. Fields. the greatest!

Duck soup
now that's a movie
I mostly have very varied and inconsistent taste. A single one-liner, a bit of odd lighting, a carefully structured plot... can sway my opinion of a film.

Sorry, guys, I cannot stand Laurel and Hardy, could never get why my Dad found it funny when I was young and still don't now.
My favourite movie of all time is, "A Matter of Life and Death", the most magical film I've ever seen. I am very fond of all Powell/Pressburger stuff to be honest.

Lizzy and I had a phase of going to see old Marx Brothers films at the Tyneside Film Theatre many a long year ago.
I have a particular soft spot for a decent "feel good" movie, especially if its got music in it - "Hear my song" is a particular favourite. Also the Commitments, Some Like it Hot, bloody hell even the Blues Brothers. I saw "Control", the film about Ian Curtis, early this year and it was tremendous (not exactly feel good however). Then again I love a good epic, a good sci-fi such as "Blade Runner", and I'm also a sucker for "The Godfather" trilogy.
Probably simpler to say what I can't stand - the whole rom-com, chick-flick genre - us gels have a few brain cells between us you know!! |

Excellent taste, Caryne - Powell and Pressburger are amongst the absolute masters. I love Alexander Korda's work as well - oh and David Lean. In fact, many of Lean's early films have been re-released in sparkling new prints on DVD this month -I've just received from Amazon, Madelaine and The Passionate Friend. |

To Kill A Mockingbird still chills me.
Pulp Fiction is always cool.
And Rodan, that scene where the egg is cracking I never forgot. Of course I was about 8 years old. |

I love "To Kill a Mockingbird", mk. The top also for me. And the ending Halloween scene is chilling.
Speaking of Halloween, what are some of your favorite Halloween movies, guys & gals.
Nosferatu, & also Dracula (1931) with the fantastic Bela Lugosi

I have to say I do like a Matter of Life & Death. watched on DVD just last week and introduced my wife to it, whom I canno tbelieve had never seen it before.

then again young Frankenstein is good too.
My daughtet has a rocking horse that when you pulled one of its ears, it would neigh. you can imagine how often I would say "Frau Blucher" and then pull that ear. Our daughter is now nearly seven and has watched AND LIKED Young Frankestein. She now does the same...
