Hi all again. Especially LK. Just after the end of the day 50 years ago since Jimi Died . Remembering all the things my mates and I did that evening. Local pub in the local big town had a really good DJ who played all the tracks off most things Jimi played on all that evening. Very sad day. I have been fixing up my old Sony TC 366 reel to reel tape recorder I used when I recorded Casablanca on the 1974 gig at the Rainbow when they supported Arthur and Love. I was asked for copies of any tapes I had of Casablanca by the singer Aliki Ashman and after a lot of work and experimenting I sent her copies of all 3 concerts and radio broadcasts I had. I thought that the tapes might be NBG but it turns out they sound OK and she was happy with results. Now I come to the problem. I also recorded Arthur and Love at the Rainbow and I am not sure if it has ever been released. As I have said before I was asked by Arthur's management for a copy of the tape and I sent them a cassette. What happened to that cassette I am not sure and I am asking if anybody else has heard a live recording of Arthur and Love at the Rainbow on 23rd May 1974. I have the original 1/4 inch 1/4 track stereo recording made using the Sony with a crossed pair of AKG D190 E placed on a stand at the mixing desk. Arthur listened to it the next day at the Slough Leisure Centre gig and was happy with the results. I only listened to it a few times then put it away until a few weeks ago. Like the recorder it has sat for about 20 years unused as other recording mediums became available. As I say I have listened to it a few times in last few weeks and it has strong vocals from Arthur, very much in tune though there were problems with the monitors not being very loud at the gig. So the question is am I listening to stuff that has not been released or are there tapes or albums doing the rounds that were either recorded by men with big hats with tape recorders inside or did the cassette I sent get made into an album. As Arthur asked me to make the recording for him I am not sure what copyright is involved so at the moment I do not really want to send anybody that wants a copy one. It is not a long gig and will go by standard Dropbox gigabyte limitations. I have not copied it to computer yet but I have specialised software which works OK as I used it for the Casablanca tapes. As I said the quality is very good for a 46 year old tape but the mix is a bit vocal heavy and as the microphones were behind the audience their reaction is a bit muted. So just wondering what to do really. Due to Covid 19 and my underlying health problems I cannot leave the house to post lots of CD's everywhere. So any suggestions really Hope everybody is OK. Happy you are staying safe, Harvey. As I hope all we children of the 60's are...scary times.
I haven't heard anything from the Rainbow 1974. It sure would be sweet to hear it and hope it somehow gets out there to your satisfaction.
The only decent live boots I have from 1970 are the ones that circulates: "Live In England" and I am not ever sure where that was recorded or if it is a compilation of various gigs-or what it is. Also the 1970 live at Fillmore, and Lee/Hendrix Blue Thumb Acetates.
Yours would be a great addition to Love fan libraries everywhere.
Cheers!

Hi Harvey and LK
I was at the Barbarellas Birmingham gig in 1974.
I have two cds from that Tour Bristol and Glasgow.
Having checked The Freedom Man site he does include the Rainbow Concert in his Love Seventies Recordings list.
I’m sure your recording would be well received.
Please keep us informed

Hey Harvey, this week I'll try to find out if there's any additional information about the Rainbow show beyond the unreleased recording that circulated. I'll contact the Freedom Man also to find out.
If I were in my mind, it, I would use, William

Hi Guys. Thanks a lot for the input and the link to Freedom Man website which I have checked. As you say the Rainbow gig Thursday May 23rd 1974 was bootlegged but I have not heard it. I will check what is on the tape and see if it is the same songs as mine. The mix I have, as I said, was taken at the desk with crossed pair of microphones so is probably similar to the one on bootleg ( depends where he/she was standing). Vocals were well up in the mix. From my notes the Bristol Colston Hall ( not allowed to mention that now as he was slave trader ) gig on Wednesday 8th May 1974 was first of the tour and was not that good as everybody sorting out things. The Glasgow gig Thursday 30th May 1974 was OK I think. I will try and copy the Gig I have onto a file and send it to anybody that wants a copy via Dropbox if you send me an email address. I do not think there is anybody who is going to complain after all this time and if gig has already been bootlegged. Might take a few days as I have 3 x Sony TC366 tape recorders now, having decided to buy and fix a couple more but none are in perfect working order at the moment as I am waiting for spares (second hand). When I get one working properly I will make the file from the tape then I can send out to a few people who can hopefully send to others. All is Ok here just outside London at the moment but I have kept away from everybody since February. Food supplies and Post are OK now . After few weeks of fine weather here forecast is total change from tomorrow Wednesday so if wet and cold I will spend more time on fixing things indoors and hopefully spares will arrive. I will be back in a few days. Stay safe all of you . Harvey the roadie |

Ok the old recorder is fixed Ok now and locks in play and does not slow down after a few minutes. This is the original recorder that I used to record the gig at the Rainbow so it should sound as it was then as heads have not been re-aligned or messed with. Played the tape up to half way through concert and the running order is same as Freedom Man has listed so it is the same concert so nothing that has not been heard before, just recorded from a different place in the audience. I will play rest through later then make a file of it. Should be ready after the weekend. Mix is fairly quiet on the guitars which is a shame as Mel and John were playing a lot of good stuff. Drums are quite loud and bass is fairly loud. Arthur's vocals are quite loud but backing vocals a bit quiet. So it all sounds a bit like a quiet club gig not the Rainbow. I will be here again when all is transferred to computer file. Harvey the Roadie |

Hi Harvey, I have some photographs from the 1974 tour looking across the stage and there seem to be a few of the road crew in the photographs . Were you out front on the tour, or onstage? Thanks. Dukie aka White Dog... |

Hi All.. All the old tape sent to files now and 1 CD burned and all sounds good for a 46 year old tape. There may be some stuff not on Freedom Man tape towards the end as the listings on the end of that drift off a bit Last tune on my tape is a version of Always See Your Face mixed with Walk Right In, which was last number of the set. And then the most important bit of the whole evening, me asking for the house lights to be turned up. I have not sent it to Dropbox yet but I have used that before for big music files so should be Ok. I will need some Email addresses to send it to and I think you will have to sign in to Dropbox but that is free I think or a lot may have it already if you have been sending music files. Or if anybody knows any other ways to send big files ( I will check on the size later) that are free let me know and I will try them. Might be an idea to save me some time if a few people from lets say every country ask me then you can swop them amongst yourselves as I do not want to be buried in requests and I am not sure how many people are interested. Dukie, I would be very interested in any photos, I did have the colour ones that used to be on here from the Dingwalls gig Wednesday 22nd May 1974 and I was in about 3 of those in the background but they have disappeared off here now and the photographer who took them has also gone now I think and he was not keen to share pictures without payment. My files have probably been deleted in a change from windows 3 to windows 10 or whatever seems to wipe out half my pictures every time. The B & W ones of Dunstable Civic Hall which are still on here I think , I am not in any of those, only one of the Road crew Logan is in one shot I think, reason I am not in them was because I had been told to clear a lot of the photographers from the side of the stage by Bruce Riley as there were rather a lot. I was on stage for nearly all the gigs and the Rainbow one I had to rush back from the recorder at the mixing desk back to the stage. Or the Oxford University May Ball on 1st June 1974 where I was at the front of the stage throwing people off the low stage as they were all very drunk and trying to get on the stage and Arthur was not happy about that, lots of people grabbing microphones and shouting and no sign of the Rugby club who were supposed to be doing security. But along with the roadie from Blackfoot Sue who were sharing the bill we kept things under control. Anyway I will be back tomorrow. Oh great.... I am just listening to the files as I type and the software has decided that the bit at the end with my voice is unimportant so it has cut that off. Computer says no !!. Talk later Harvey the Roadie |

The photographs that I have are from Dunstable in 1974 and I believe that they were taken by Brian Hogg who ran the fanzine called Bam Balam. You can email me at dukie690@me.com if you want to get in touch. |

Revelation. Dukie. I have sent file to Dropbox and they say it has been sent to your email. Not sure if that is right. They may hold it until you ask for it to download it. I have sent you an email so you can contact me via email or you may need it to collect file. Very difficult to send large files if you have used Dropbox before as they just seem to want money money money. Found a free route though so hope it gets through Ok. As I say in email it does need some EQ on it to cut out the bass and adding treble makes the guitars a bit louder. Harvey the Roadie |
