I am from Minnesota (my early years). And my mother's side of the family has strong Scandinavian roots going back centuries, as does Minnesota generally-- Swanson, Snowberg...great aunts and uncles..Oli and Ida...Auggie and Hannah...

Strong ties between Norway and Minnesota it seems still today. I've always felt more than a bit Scandinavian in my soul. Viking blood it seems. Leif Eriksson. ..his statue is in Duluth...lots of family in Duluth, and Fergus Falls, just across the border from Fargo. They all have that Scandinavian flavoured accent.

The Kesington Runestone discovered in a field was inscribed by Scandinavian explorers from Norway and Sweden that where there in 1362.

Bobby Dylan was there too...

Guess that is why is like the language in song too.

Great read Lk! Btw did any of your norwegian immigrant relatives have a hardanger fiddle? Was such a common instrument here, not only in folk music but also among the many that didnt really play it, they just had it hang up on the wall in the livingroom :-)

Took me a really long time to partly accept this strange fiddle sound, think ive heard to many amateurs play it in my childhood(and belive me its much worse sound than beginner fiddle player sound..). The purest norwegian folk music with lots of vocal "kveding"(dont know the english word) and hardanger fiddle is still to much for me but toned down a little like some of Ingebjørg Bratlands music I think is great.

Hardanger fiddle can be great too when not overdone, like in the great Coen brothers movie Fargo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4NCC0dUXks&t=100s

really ancient norwegian music Warduna and Aurora, long before the hardanger fiddles.. from the Viking times..A little disappointed by her latest albums but what a voice and talent!

Imaging the acustics from that hole in the mountain scene! I have to go to the Træna festival one day, even if its far up north.

Thank you. Great images and imagery for our times. Stunning music. Is this an Aurora project?

Ahhhh....I just googled Wardruna...a great group. A joint effort by Wardruna and Aurora for this?

While on the subject of female singers, can I just mention Judith Durham, formerly of The Seekers, a band so "square" that I didn't like to be seen listening to them back in the 60s though they produced some cracking songs. Judith has and had a stunning voice and is still active in music - here's some examples:
First, in 1965, aged 22: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSxwqBJLU8A
And in 1997, aged 54: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vufcgdDG1jI
And then in 2014, aged 71 (while still recovering from a stroke she suffered the previous year): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZuA8LvTWNY

Scottish and European, not British.

Stormbringer, Purples most underrated album. Blackmore hated what he called the funky blues of the album and the direction the band were going, so thats whyhe left and started Rainbow. Myself I love the album, had to listen to it at least 5-6 times then it started to grow. Of course the title track and their best ballad ever, Soldier of fortune I loved after first listening but the rest of the album, nah was not very impressed.. But as I were growing older... there still are a few fillers but what a great Jon Lord Solo on high ball shooter and such great vocals and 60s inspired Blackmore solo on The Gipsy! Yeah the melodies might be a little dull at first listening but it growes, I promise!

And when Im into Purple and underrated, their most underrated and also untypically, strangest and trippiest song they ever did in the 70s is A200 from the Burn album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdNbBL4PnU4

Bernie Mardsden Lead guitar Whitesnake 78-83 is one of the most underrarted guitarist ever. Two reasons as I see it: he was always compared to blackmore because of Coverdales Purple connection. Second is Whitesnake didnt give so much space for guitar solos. But listen to this, live from 2017 jesus christ can he still play the blues or what?? Even have a decent voice, better than Coverdale have at the moment. for sure.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndOb4HTaa0w&t=725s

Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Colorado. Man, takes me back to the 7os, and that was a great time musically. Neil with Harvest, and After the Gold Rush, man, I like this new album. It is great to jam to: She Showed Me Love.
Anyway, hello everybody.
BF, Nice turn-on above.

It's all the same day.

Hello, LeeRob! I like the ol' Neil sound also...good to hear from you, LR.

And Neil bringing back Nils is sweet.
