Forever Changes Master Tapes Arrive At ERC For Work To Begin On Its Reissue!

UK’s The Electric Recording Company (ERC), a purist-audio label which up till now has released highly select classical and jazz recordings from the golden era of recorded sound (1950s to 1970s), has been given the go-ahead from Warner Music to release Love’s Forever Changes!

Haven’t heard of ERC? Well, not many music lovers have. Founded by Pete Hutchison who also founded indie label Peacefrog Records (yes, it was named after the Doors’ song), ERC specialises in releasing strictly limited individually numbered editions (between 99 and 300) of highly prized recordings such as Johanna Martzy’s Unaccompanied Violin Sonatas (Bach) and Sonny Rollins’ Way Out West (in true mono). These vinyl-only pressings have been lovingly and uncompromisingly cut from the original master tapes using genuine valve reel-to-reel and cutting lathes from the period, and housed in faithfully recreated sleeve artwork crafted by hand using vintage letterpress machinery.

I asked Pete why he chose Forever Changes as ERC’s first foray into rock music, to which he said it was one of his all-time favourite albums and it was one that was allowed from the list of requested titles given to Warner Music. He elaborated, “We had to go through a very rigorous interview process by the Warner studio team before being allowed to handle these tapes. This included conference calls and a studio visit for the team who flew to London from the US. We had to explain our process and demonstrate spooling, etc. Our engineers have 40 years’ experience between them, so things went okay. These tapes are the holy grail and are priceless. Storage and security were also a major consideration.”

We discussed what he felt were the characteristics that he wanted to bring out from the recording to which he said, “My feeling is that the original tape has positive attributes that are lost in the heavily equalised versions, including the original pressing. That is not to say that those cuts are not good – many are – but I wanted to hear something new in our end-product. My reference was the original pressing which I love but thought it would be good to go a different way, that is, to hear the tape naked without equalisation, and cut down a little on the levels.”

Forever Changes will be reissued by ERC in about three months’ time, in both stereo and mono versions. The quantity is unconfirmed for now, as is pricing, but a look at the going rate of currently available titles (https://electricrecordingco.com/shop) of between 300 to 500 pounds would discourage many a fan. However, if you delve into the label’s sound (pun intended) philosophy and Pete’s perfectionism in pursuing audio nirvana, wouldn’t you want to own the ultimate sounding version of your favourite album of all time?

yeah, Love recorded with Blaine, Conka, when they were still being managed by Hopkins (this was pre Elektra)

did 5 tracks or whatever it was. Hopkins lost the tapes when he was gonna make copies

of course DC didn't play on the 1st Love album (Arthur did for the most part)

maybe it'll turn up? after all the Hendrix/Lee acetate turned up on eBay !

I'm more intrigued by the soundboard recording at the Whisk of the Forever Changes band though. I don't really like the 1st Love album too much. Can't Explain, DC are great, but And more? Colored Falls Falling? and My Little Red Book is a fine single, but its a slight song. And its first!

oh please. Its the best album ever recorded by anyone. I like the rough mixes of FC that Steve Hoffman was given. If theres a 65th anniversary of the album with Red Light Green Light and Gethesemene (the great lost album) attached, I'm buying! the album is lifesblood. I've played it endlessly for the past 37 years!

Wow, I see all these various re-releases and Alt/Mix Love albums, seems to be nothing more than a money play for collectors which I am not.
I don't know that there's anything more to mine, and hasn't been in years. The positive is Johnny and Love are still performing, I see newer
bands doing covers of Love tunes, and a general recognition that perhaps wasn't there 15 years ago.

more intrigued by the 1965 lost Love album that Hopkins lost when he was making copies of it. Blaine drummed on it. Conka

Was unaware of this or had forgotten...what is it about, Joe?

Nope. Once maybe but nothing to write home about ...it seems like a fold down with nothing new to hear...that being said, I like da Capo and the debut in mono & stereo alike.

Yes.They got all the USA Elektra printer plates to print the original cover art. That European FC release on the back cover had the strange Arthur Lee pic and actually listed only four members in the Love band, completely deleting Michael Stuart as drummer!

I'm assuming its the original group photo on the back! not the picture of Arthur !

Ok, so the reviews is less than stunning. Just a fold down to mono from the existing master tapes (not the tragically lost multi-track tapes tho'). And the sound is less tan HQ...nothing we haven't heard and the guy who told me about it sold it right away for the same price he paid for it.

Many of the Electric Recording Co. release are fantastic so this was disappointing--the outer record jacket was flimsy and not impressively done, even tho' authentic otherwise.

according the Times FC was due out in July?
Joe Morris Posted - 18/07/2020 : 18:01:13

there was a picture of one of the Elektra tape cases in the NYT artcile

Wow...there are enough folks out there with a lot of disposable incomeI guess...
this is from a conversation I had with Michael Stuart:

(Michael gave me a cool answer...honest as always...so I quoted $420 (USD) which I believe includes shipping and handling.)

Yes, well $420 is quite of bit of bread for some people, but there are so many millionaires now that I suppose it might sell enough copies to make it worthwhile. Or not.

I mean there's only so much they can do to fix it. Wasn't it just 8 tracks? I know one of the few times I listened to it, it sounded pretty much like Kenny and I were on the same track. That alone screws it up right there. But if somebody has an extra $420. lying around and enjoys listening to Forever Changes, they can go for it. Who knows?

Take care, Michael

I think that I will stick with the 50th Anniversary box set - which sits proudly next to a beautiful vinyl reissue of Love Revisited. I don't think that my 68 year old ears could ever pick up anything superior to that. Still it's interesting to hear that Forever Changes is still arousing such attention from the audio specialists.....as well it should of course.

And finally......a 50th Anniversary revamp for False Start in 2020 anyone......perhaps with the Olympic recordings with Hendrix? We can only dream.
