I don't want to turn this into Trip Advisor, but can anyone suggest any interesting record/cd/book stores in New York for a projected visit in the not too distant future?

You mean Moondog? I know he was pretty eclectic with his stuff. I never saw him playing in person.

Antifolk?

And all that reminds me of Moondog...he was the avant garde musician of the NYC streets at one time...

....and to our travelin' friends, if anybody comes up to you in the Village wearing a stethoscope and asks if you want to hear your heart for a dime..well..it's up to you!...we all ain't doctors!!!....

you can sell records & cds at Princeton Exchange, though I've never been (its in southern Jersey I believe, close by where the Jersey Devil haunts?

and I live in the northeast part of the state

I guess Hoboken has Sounds, which I've heard is good, but the Village might be the best place for records, vinyl, cds.. I used to pick up Syd Barrett bootlegs on Bleecker in the early 90s (Stoned Alone I'm looking at you!)
though you might not be able to find that rare Love Four Sail on vinyl on a side street off of Bleecker and close by Christopher Street any more!

Thanks. I knew that I would get some good advice from the board!

oh and on Long Island..there's 'Looney Tunes'..they have a web site too where you can buy stuff

joe mentioned the ones in Manhattan..there's another boro nearby and that's Brooklyn....hipsters are there and some more record stores..could be cheaper too!...

in Bklyn:
blackgoldrecords.com
soundfixrecords.com

And you can go to Williamsburg in Bklyn. I know there are stores there that I've gone through near Bedford Avenue but I'm not sure of their names.

And if you want to be daring and go to New Joisy..it's the Princeton Record Exchange.

And if you're into Nusrat fateh Khan..go to the Pak Punjab Deli!..

enjoy

Hi Dukie,

Maybe we should turn this into trip advisor :)

Not been to NYC for a few years, but the Strand bookstore is well worth a visit, and bleeker bob's records too (though I recall it's very pricey).

Have fun.

Generation (?) Records (on Thompson (?)) (off of Christopher Street)

Rocket scientist (on St Marks?) (if its still there?)

Probably the best cd places are on Christopher in the Village (where are you? in the Village!)

Other Music has a lot of good cd/vinyl but it might be pricy if you're looking for that Nick Drake Made to Love Magic lp!

Midnight Records RIP (they used to sell old issues of the Castle over there on 23rd between 8th and 9th - think the business continues as a mailorder)

Tower Records RIP

Venus Records (on St Marks) RIP

Kims might still be on St Marks Place, though it might only be cds sold (cheap!) and no longer a Kims Video

Expect to pay a bit for the rare import of She Comes in Colors for instance
